Planning pillar: Learning Transfer UWT groups this reflection and learning activity under Learning Transfer in its Gathering Effectiveness planning framework.

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Test collective song knowledge and practice rapid team consensus under short listening intervals.

Use it when: Use during breaks or transitions when a lighthearted, low-stakes listening challenge fits the agenda.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have hearing impairments without alternative accommodations, or when quiet focused work is required.

Group arrangement: Teams of 3 to 5 participants. For group sizes where participants remain, distribute single participants across existing teams. For example, 17 people divide into three teams of 4 and one team of 5, keeping all teams between 3 and 5 members.

Timing: Playmeo lists 10 to 15 minutes; structured here as a complete 15-minute game with 8 music clips.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Substantial technical prep: Curate and queue 8 audio snippets across varied eras and genres.
  2. Test speaker volume across the room before participants arrive.
  3. Place one score sheet and pen at each team station.

Say this to open

We are going to play Name That Tune in small teams. I will play eight short musical clips, each about ten to fifteen seconds long. After each clip, talk quietly with your team and write down the song title and the artist. Please keep your team's guesses quiet so other teams can focus. Each correct title earns one point, and each correct artist earns one point. No phones or song-identifying apps are permitted.

How to run it

  1. Form teams and explain rules 2 minutes

Deliver the opening script. Divide participants into teams of 3 to 5 and distribute one score sheet and pen per team. Remind everyone to whisper their team guesses to keep them secret.

  2. Play snippets and record guesses 7 minutes

Play clip 1 for 10 to 15 seconds. Give teams 30 seconds to confer and write down their guess. Repeat this sequence for clips 2 through 8 without revealing answers yet.

  3. Swap and score sheets 4 minutes

Have teams swap score sheets with another team. Read the official title and artist for all 8 clips. Scorers mark one point for the exact title and one point for the correct artist, giving a maximum score of 16 points. Return sheets to the original owners.

  4. Debrief and declare winner 2 minutes

Tally the final scores, recognize the highest-scoring team, and facilitate a quick two-question reflection on team consensus with two or three volunteer responses from the room.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Completed team score sheets with tallied points.

Remote

Run via video conference using direct computer audio sharing. Teams use private breakout rooms or private chat channels to deliberate and record answers on a shared online form or document.

Hybrid

In-person participants form table teams while remote participants form an online team in a separate virtual breakout room. The facilitator shares audio through the main room sound system and the meeting platform microphone input simultaneously. Remote teams submit answers via direct message to the facilitator.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Audio is muffled or too quiet for people at the back.
Pause the round immediately, adjust speaker volume or position, and replay the snippet from the beginning.
One team member dominates the guessing and ignores others.
Instruct teams to pass the pen so a different member writes down and confirms each answer before moving on.
