United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Mr and Mrs Wright
Participants listen to a narrative and step or lean left whenever they hear the word 'left' and right whenever they hear 'right' or 'Wright'. The whole room self-monitors their directional reactions during a brief, active reset.
5 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Re-engage physical attention and active listening through quick directional reaction movements.
Use it when: Use during a workshop or training transition when participants show physical fatigue or low attention after seated desk work.
Skip it when: Skip when the group is working under strict time pressure to complete an analytical task, or when spatial constraints prevent participants from shifting side to side safely.
Group arrangement: Whole group, standing or seated in place with personal buffer space
Timing: Playmeo describes this as an energiser completed in under 2 minutes; UWT allocates 5 minutes to accommodate setup, physical accessibility options, and a brief return to order.
Materials and tools
- Facilitator story script (see Participant Materials)
Before participants arrive
- Ensure all participants have roughly an arm's-length clearance on their left and right sides, either standing or seated.
Say this to open
We need a quick two-minute physical reset. You can do this standing or seated. I will read a short story about Mr and Mrs Wright. Whenever you hear the word 'right' or the name 'Wright', take one small step or lean to your right. Whenever you hear the word 'left', take one small step or lean to your left. There is no talking, just listening and moving. If you prefer not to shift your body, you can point your index finger left or right.
How to run it
Set the rules and check spacing 1 minutes
Explain the directional response rule. Direct participants to check their immediate space so they do not bump into chairs, tables, or neighbors. Offer seated leaning or hand-pointing as equal options.
Read the story script 2 minutes
Read the provided 'Mr and Mrs Wright' narrative aloud at a steady, moderate pace. Emphasize the text naturally without over-stressing the cue words. Participants step, lean, or point in the direction called. Continue reading until the paragraph ends.
Self-assess and reset 1 minutes
Pause and invite participants to return to center. Give participants a brief moment to self-evaluate whether they kept pace or crossed directions, without scoring or public call-outs.
Return to meeting agenda 1 minutes
Ask one brief closing reflection question on group attention and transition immediately back to the scheduled working agenda.
Debrief questions
- What made it easy or difficult to align your body with the words you heard?
- How did shifting your physical orientation impact your focus for our next agenda item?
Finished output: A shared physical movement reset completed by the entire room without scores or eliminated players.
Remote
Participants keep cameras on in gallery view. The facilitator reads the script over the main audio channel. Remote participants lean their torso or point left and right in frame. Note that mirrored camera settings mean someone moving to their personal right may appear to move screen-left; instruct everyone to respond to their own personal right regardless of screen view.
Hybrid
Room participants stand or sit at their tables while remote participants join via video. The facilitator reads through the primary room microphone so remote attendees hear clearly. Remote and in-person participants participate simultaneously using their own physical frames.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may remain seated and lean their torso, or simply point an index finger to the left and right.
- Any participant may opt out of moving and simply listen to the story without needing to state a reason.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants bump into adjacent chairs or people when stepping.
- Pause the reading and instruct everyone to take a half-step forward or switch to seated leaning.
- Participants get confused because their physical right is inverted on gallery video screens.
- Remind remote participants to follow their own physical right hand, ignoring what appears on other video tiles.
Terms used here
- Directional reaction: Moving the body or pointing toward a specific side immediately upon hearing a designated auditory cue.
Facilitator Story Script: Mr and Mrs Wright
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo blog posts and activity descriptions by Mark Collard under the title 'Mr & Mrs Wright' and 'The Best Two-Minute Energiser I Have Ever Played'.
Retained the traditional Playmeo energiser mechanic where participants step or lean left and right in response to the homophones 'Wright' and 'right' alongside 'left'. Because the fetched source excerpt truncated the narrative mid-sentence, UWT provided a complete, self-contained neutral script of matching length and density. UWT also set the total session block to 5 minutes to cover orientation and debrief.
