Hot Spots
Players take turns dribbling to floor markers placed in front of a basketball hoop, shooting, and retrieving the marker if they make the shot. The team keeps rotating until all spots are cleared from the floor.
10 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice turn-taking, ball control, and shooting from varied court positions.
Use it when: Active physical education, recess, or youth sports clinics with access to a basketball hoop.
Skip it when: Sedentary meetings, quiet training sessions, or venues lacking a safe basketball hoop and clear court.
Group arrangement: Single line of 4 to 8 players per hoop, or up to 3 parallel lines if court space and hoops permit
Timing: Playworks notes less than 10 minutes; 10 minutes covers briefing, active play, and debrief.
Materials and tools
- 1 basketball per active line
- 10 to 15 rubber poly spots per hoop
- 1 marker cone per line
Before participants arrive
- Place a marker cone at roughly half court facing the basket.
- Scatter 10 to 15 poly spots across the key and surrounding shooting arc.
- Set the basketball at the head of the line behind the cone.
Say this to open
We are playing Hot Spots. Line up behind the cone. When it is your turn, take the ball, dribble to any spot on the court, and shoot. If you make the shot, grab the ball, pick up your spot, drop the spot by our cone, and pass to the next player. If you miss, grab the rebound and pass the ball back so the next player can go right away. We keep shooting until all the spots are cleared.
How to run it
Set positions and review rules 2 minutes
Gather participants behind the starting cone. State the opening script. Demonstrate dribbling to a spot, taking a shot, retrieving the ball, and either clearing the spot or leaving it on the floor.
Clear spots across the court 3 minutes
The first player takes the basketball, dribbles to any remaining poly spot, and shoots. If the basket is made, the shooter retrieves the ball, picks up the poly spot, stacks it beside the cone, and passes the ball to the next person. If the shot misses, the shooter retrieves the rebound, leaves the spot, and passes the ball back immediately.
Target remaining perimeter spots 3 minutes
Continue the rotation as easier close spots disappear and longer-range spots remain. If a spot proves difficult after several rounds, allow players one bonus second shot from that spot before passing the ball back. Play continues until all spots are collected or time expires.
Count spots and debrief 2 minutes
Stop play. Count the total spots collected. Ask 2 participants to answer one debrief question each. If time permits, invite participants to scatter the spots for the next group.
Debrief questions
- Which court spots were easiest to clear, and which took the most tries?
- What helped your line pass the ball smoothly so everyone got turns?
Finished output: All poly spots collected at the base cone, or a final count of spots cleared within the time limit.
Remote
This game requires a physical hoop and ball and cannot run online natively. An unrelated online coordination alternative is a digital board where participants take turns picking target cards to answer quick team trivia questions.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not feasible because physical shooting requires presence on the court. Run an all-remote digital activity instead if participants are separated.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may pass without explanation by handing the basketball to the next person in line.
- Participants who prefer not to run or shoot may serve as ball rebounders or spot collectors beside the basket.
If the session gets stuck
- Shooters crowd the key while waiting for their turn.
- Remind players that everyone waiting must stand behind the half-court cone until the pass arrives.
- Distant perimeter spots cause the game to stall when players keep missing.
- Permit two quick attempts per turn or slide the distant spots two steps closer to the hoop.
Terms used here
- Poly spot: A flat, non-slip rubber or vinyl circle placed on a gym floor as a position marker.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in the Playworks Game Library under the titles Hot Spots and Hot Shot Basketball.
Preserved the Playworks mechanic of dribbling to a poly spot, shooting, and claiming the spot upon making the basket. UWT expanded the step breakdown to 4 steps across the 10-minute duration, added standard safety rules, accessible non-shooting roles, and reflection questions.
