Coming and Going of the Rain

Participants mirror a sequence of body percussion movements led by the facilitator, moving from quiet palm rubbing to foot stomping and back to silence to mimic a rainstorm.

5 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Focus collective attention and introduce physical movement through shared nonverbal rhythm.

Use it when: Use as a short physical reset between heavy presentation blocks or when attention lags.

Skip it when: Skip when the space requires silence for adjacent rooms or when group members cannot tolerate sharp acoustic changes.

Group arrangement: Whole group standing or seated in view of the facilitator

Timing: Playmeo lists 1 to 2 minutes; UWT expands to 5 minutes to accommodate silent setup and brief closing reflections.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Ensure participants have enough elbow room to clap and tap thighs without striking neighbors.

Say this to open

Watch me closely. Without speaking, match my movements and sounds as soon as you see them change.

How to run it

  1. Establish the light rain 1 minutes

Stand where everyone can see you. Begin rubbing your open palms together gently to create a soft rustling sound. Signal nonverbally for the room to join in until everyone is rubbing their palms.

  2. Build the storm to a crescendo 1 minutes

Transition through the storm sounds, holding each until the room mirrors it: snap fingers briskly, tap two fingers into an open palm, switch to a full open-palm clap, slap thighs, and finally stamp feet on the floor while continuing thigh slapping to represent heavy thunder.

  3. Subside back to silence 1 minutes

Reverse the sequence step by step: cease foot stomping, return to open-palm clapping, drop to two-finger palm tapping, click fingers, and return to gentle palm rubbing before bringing both hands to complete rest in total silence.

  4. Reflect on collective rhythm 2 minutes

Invite two or three participants to share how following visual cues without spoken directions affected their focus. Close the activity and return to the main agenda.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A shared physical warm-up cycle completed collectively from silence to peak volume and back to rest.

Remote

Run with all cameras turned on in gallery view. Ask participants to unmute their microphones so the layered sound is audible, or keep microphones muted if audio compression cuts out percussion sounds, focusing instead on visual synchrony.

Hybrid

In-person participants stand in sight of the room camera. Remote attendees pin the facilitator's video tile. Both groups mirror the actions simultaneously.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants start talking or laughing loudly instead of copying movements.
Maintain direct eye contact, place a finger to your lips briefly, and exaggerate the hand motions to pull attention back to nonverbal mirroring.
Some participants struggle to snap their fingers.
Offer an alternative like tapping fingernails against each other or lightly patting chest muscles.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo Activity Database as an energizer by Mark Collard.

Retained the exact 7-stage sound progression (palms rubbing, finger clicking, two-finger clapping, full clapping, thigh slapping, foot stomping, and gradual reversal) from the Playmeo record. UWT framed the progression into structured steps, set explicit group boundaries, and added access options.
