Workplace Chat Story Builder

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Practice turn-taking, concise written communication, and cooperative narrative development in a shared messaging space.

Use it when: Use as a light opener at the start of a remote meeting or during a scheduled team break with everyone present in the shared chat.

Skip it when: Skip when team members lack access to a common digital channel, when mobile device use creates privacy or off-hours concerns, or when urgent tasks demand full attention.

Group arrangement: Single group thread or subgroups of 4 to 8 participants in separate chat channels

Timing: 15 minutes suggested by UWT to allow pacing, turn-taking, and debrief within typical live or scheduled team meetings.

Materials and tools

• A shared text channel or messaging app already approved for team use
• One countdown timer visible to the facilitator

Before participants arrive

1. Create a dedicated chat channel or thread titled 'Story Builder'.
2. Ensure all participants have access and write permissions in the selected tool.
3. Post the starter sentence into the chat thread before beginning the activity.

Say this to open

We are going to play a short chat game called Story Builder. I will post an opening sentence in our chat. You will each add one sentence at a time to build the story together. You can post whenever you are ready, but you must wait for someone else to post before you take another turn. Reading along without posting is completely fine.

How to run it

1. Set rules and post starter 3 minutes

   Explain the rules: each message must be exactly one sentence, participants cannot post twice in a row, and all content must stay work-appropriate. Post the prompt: 'Our team opened an ordinary box and found a map of a place that did not exist.'

2. Build the story 7 minutes

   Participants contribute single sentences directly in the chat thread. Monitor the flow to ensure no single participant dominates and no back-to-back entries occur. If the story pauses, prompt the group neutrally without forcing any individual to type.

3. Bring narrative to a close 2 minutes

   Announce that the story has two minutes remaining. Call for one or two concluding sentences to resolve the narrative. Stop new contributions when the timer reaches zero.

4. Debrief and conclude 3 minutes

   Invite two or three spoken or typed reactions to the debrief questions. Conclude on time and archive or close the thread according to standard team workspace habits.

Debrief questions

• Which sentence completely shifted the direction of the narrative?
• What helped you decide when to jump in versus when to wait for others?

Finished output: A completed multi-sentence collaborative micro-story preserved in the team chat thread.

Remote

Run directly inside the main video call chat or a dedicated team messaging channel (such as Slack or Teams). Participants submit sentences in real time while the facilitator tracks the timer.

Hybrid

In-person and remote participants both type into the same shared chat channel using their laptops or mobile devices. Check that everyone has access before starting.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may read along passively as audience members without posting any text.
• Participants can use speech-to-text tools or type short sentences according to their motor or visual preferences.

If the session gets stuck

Two participants post sentences at the exact same moment.

Acknowledge both entries and declare that the next contributor can choose either branch to build upon.

One participant writes a huge paragraph instead of a single sentence.

Remind the group gently in the chat: 'Keep it to a single sentence per turn so everyone has room to steer the story.'
