Evolved Action

Participants pass a combined physical movement and vocal sound around a circle, replicating only what their immediate predecessor did. The group compares the starting action with the final result to see how signals mutate across handoffs.

12 minutes | 6 to 20 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Demonstrate through direct observation how nonverbal and verbal signals transform when passed sequentially between individuals.

Use it when: Use at the start of sessions on communication, observation, active listening, or message fidelity across handoffs.

Skip it when: Skip when participants cannot comfortably observe each other or when the group prefers low-visibility, quiet reflection.

Group arrangement: Single circle where all participants face inward and can clearly see and hear each other.

Timing: TrainerBubble lists a 5 to 15 minute band. UWT suggests 12 minutes to give up to 20 people realistic transition time without rushing turns.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Arrange chairs in a single open circle or clear floor space so everyone can stand or sit with clear lines of sight to all other participants.

Say this to open

We are going to pass an action around the circle, similar to the game of Telephone, but using both movement and sound. The first person will do a brief physical movement paired with a short sound or spoken phrase. The next person copies exactly what they saw and heard from the person right before them, including any accidental pauses, expressions, or extra sounds. We will pass it person by person until it returns to the start.

How to run it

  1. Set sequence and rules 2 minutes

Form a circle. State the turn order clockwise around the circle. Explain that each participant replicates only the action and sound performed by the person directly before them, aiming for exact duplication rather than deliberate reinvention. If anyone prefers to pass, they may say 'pass' or signal forward; the next person in line will then copy the gesture from the last active participant who performed.

  2. Initiate first action 1 minutes

Ask for one volunteer or begin yourself. The starter performs a simple action combined with a sound. For example, tap both shoulders twice while saying 'tick tock' or clap hands once while whistling two notes. The starter demonstrates once clearly.

  3. Pass around the circle 6 minutes

Participant two copies what participant one did. Participant three copies participant two, incorporating any accidental shifts, laughs, or changes in tempo. Keep turns brief, roughly 10 to 15 seconds per person. Continue clockwise until every participant has taken a turn and the gesture returns to the original starter, who performs the final evolved version.

  4. Compare and debrief 3 minutes

Ask the original starter to perform the opening action side-by-side with the final version. Invite 2 or 3 quick spoken observations from the room, or ask everyone to call out the single biggest change they noticed.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A completed sequential pass of a combined sound and movement, concluding with a comparison between the initial and final gesture.

Remote

The facilitator posts the full turn order in the shared chat before beginning. Participants keep cameras on. When called, each person unmutes, performs the copied gesture and sound once directly into the camera, calls the next person by name, and mutes again. The sequence ends when the starter receives and performs the final version, then demonstrates the original version.

Hybrid

Establish a single unified turn order alternating between in-room participants and remote participants, posted in chat and visible on the room screen. Remote participants project video and audio to the room screen. Room participants turn toward the room camera when performing so remote attendees see facial expressions and gestures clearly.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants try to memorize the original starter's move instead of copying their immediate neighbor.
Remind the room before starting that the rule requires copying only the person immediately preceding you, including any errors or changes.
A participant creates an overly complicated or high-energy physical stunt that others cannot replicate.
Prompt the starter before beginning to keep the action to a single simple movement and a brief vocalization taking no more than three seconds.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in TrainerBubble training materials under the title 'Evolved Action'.

Preserved the core mechanic from TrainerBubble: a sequential circle passing a combined action and sound where each person copies only their predecessor. UWT expanded the run time to 12 minutes to accommodate up to 20 turns, aligned the passing rule across all steps, defined the complete return loop back to the starter, and added remote chat sequencing.
