United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Corporate Jinx

Small teams attempt to reach whole-room consensus across timed rounds. Each team submits one secret word per round, trying to match all other teams without inter-team communication.

15 minutes | 6 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Observe how teams infer assumptions and adapt strategy when attempting alignment without direct cross-group communication.

Use it when: Use during workshops on cross-team coordination, siloed communication, or collaborative decision-making.

Skip it when: Skip when the group needs to resolve an active dispute or requires a concrete operational problem-solving tool rather than an abstract parlor exercise.

Group arrangement: 3 or 4 small teams of 2 to 6 participants each, balanced as evenly as possible

Timing: 15 minutes total; includes a 3-minute setup, 7 minutes of rapid rounds, a 1-minute outcome check, and a 4-minute debrief.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Seat 3 or 4 teams at separate tables or room corners so they can converse quietly without neighboring teams overhearing.
  2. Pre-draw numbered round columns across the whiteboard, reserving the bottom half for a consolidated burned words list.
  3. Distribute blank paper slips and one pen to each team.

Say this to open

Our room goal is to reach complete consensus as quickly as possible. You succeed when every team submits the exact same word in the same round. You may talk freely within your own team, but you cannot speak, signal, or communicate with other teams. In each round, your team has sixty seconds to agree on one word, write it down, and hand it to me. Once any word has been submitted by any team, that word is burned. No team may ever submit it again.

How to run it

  1. Form teams and explain rules 3 minutes

Divide participants into 3 or 4 teams of roughly equal size. Balance remainders across teams as evenly as possible. Deliver the opening script. Emphasize that teams discuss internally only, submit one word per round, and never reuse any previously submitted word.

  2. Run submission rounds 7 minutes

Run up to 5 rapid rounds. For each round, give teams 60 seconds to deliberate, write their word, and hand in their slip. Spend roughly 15 to 20 seconds reading submissions aloud anonymously and listing them on the board as burned words. Stop immediately if every team submits the exact same word. Otherwise, announce burned words and start the next round. Stop after round 5 or when the 7-minute mark arrives.

  3. Announce outcome and transition 1 minutes

Declare the final result: either the room achieved jinx consensus, or the round limit was reached. Point to the recorded list of burned words on the board as evidence of the group's convergence or divergence.

  4. Debrief consensus patterns 4 minutes

Facilitate a short debrief using the prepared questions. Call on 2 or 3 volunteers per question to stay within time.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A visible flipchart record of submitted and retired words across successive rounds, showing either full consensus or round exhaustion.

Remote

Create 3 or 4 breakout rooms with equal participant numbers. The facilitator keeps the main room open and shares a live document or whiteboard. Each team designates a scribe who direct-messages their chosen word privately to the facilitator in the main chat when time is called. The facilitator types all submitted words onto the shared screen without attribution, keeping the full list of burned words continuously visible to everyone throughout the game.

Hybrid

Form teams containing both in-person and remote participants, or assign remote participants to their own team. Each team uses a private chat thread or separate audio channel to deliberate. Teams submit their chosen word via direct message or folded paper slip to the facilitator. The facilitator displays all submitted words on a shared screen that is continuously visible to both in-room and remote participants.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Teams whisper across tables or use visible hand gestures to coordinate words.
Remind the room immediately that non-verbal signaling invalidates the round. Nullify any matching round achieved through signaling and enforce a clean round.
A team accidentally submits a word that was already burned in an earlier round.
Announce that the submission is invalid because the word is burned. Consensus cannot occur in this round since all teams must submit valid matching words. Record the invalid submission, add any new words from other teams to the burned list, and move to the next round.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library records, which attribute the activity design to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo game mechanic: 3 to 4 teams, timed deliberation rounds, intra-team discussion only, no cross-team contact, anonymous word readout, and permanent elimination of previously submitted words. UWT adjusted the round pacing to 5 rounds (deliberation plus facilitator recording) within a 7-minute block, clarified invalid submission handling, added flexible team sizing (6 to 24 participants), remote/hybrid plans, an opening script, and debrief questions.
