United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Quick Pass
Seated participants pass soft items to their immediate neighbors while trying to avoid holding two items at once. Anyone caught with multiple items makes an agreed alert sound before passing them along.
10 minutes | 6 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice rapid coordination and attention under time pressure in a seated group format.
Use it when: Use as a seated physical energizer or transition warm-up when a group needs active focus without standing up or moving across the room.
Skip it when: Skip when participants experience arm or hand strain during rapid handling, or when seating cannot be arranged closely together.
Group arrangement: Seated circle of 6 to 18 participants. Groups of 19 to 24 can run as one circle or split into two circles of roughly equal size (each between 9 and 12 participants).
Timing: UWT suggested 10 minutes total, covering setup, two active rounds, and a brief debrief
Materials and tools
- 2 to 5 soft tossable objects (such as beanbags, stress balls, or foam blocks): use 2 items for a single circle of 6 to 12 participants; 3 items for a single circle of 13 to 18 participants; 4 items total if running a single circle of 19 to 24 or splitting into two circles of 9 to 12 (2 items per circle); keep 1 spare item on hand
Before participants arrive
- Arrange chairs in a circle with knees reasonably close so objects can be dropped or placed into neighbors laps or hands.
- Verify that the selected objects are lightweight and soft to prevent injury or noise.
Say this to open
Take a seat in our circle. We will pass these soft items around as quickly as possible. You may only hand an item to the person directly on your left or right, placing it in their hands or lap. Do not throw items across the circle. The goal is to keep items moving and avoid holding more than one at a time. If two items land with you simultaneously, you will make an agreed sound, then quickly pass them along.
How to run it
Explain rules and choose alert sound 2 minutes
Demonstrate an acceptable pass: gently place or drop the object into the adjacent neighbor's lap or open hands. Emphasize that passes go only to immediate neighbors on the left or right, never across the circle. Agree on an alert sound, such as 'Beep!' or 'Eeek!'. Conduct one neutral practice pass to confirm understanding.
Run round one 3 minutes
Distribute items evenly spaced around the circle: 2 items for groups of 6 to 12, 3 items for 13 to 18, or 4 items for 19 to 24. Signal the start. Participants pass items rapidly in either direction to immediate neighbors. When two items accumulate with one person, that participant makes the designated sound, then immediately passes both items onward. Facilitate active passing for 3 minutes.
Introduce challenge for round two 3 minutes
Pause play. Introduce one additional soft item to increase difficulty, or switch the alert sound to a new word or non-verbal gesture. Resume play for another 3 minutes, prompting participants to keep the objects circulating.
Debrief 2 minutes
Gather attention and pose the debrief questions. Collect two or three brief observations from volunteers to conclude the exercise.
Debrief questions
- What strategies helped you clear an object quickly when another one was arriving?
- How did you adjust your passing when you saw a backlog forming nearby?
Finished output: Completion of two rounds of rapid passing where participants practice tracking items, clearing bottlenecks, and reflecting on group coordination.
Remote
This physical passing activity requires direct physical handoffs and cannot be conducted online with equivalent mechanics. Online delivery is not supported for this method.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not supported because off-site participants cannot pass physical items to seated participants in the room.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may receive and pass objects hand-to-hand if lap contact is uncomfortable.
- Anyone preferring not to handle objects may act as an observer or spotter who tracks bottlenecks.
- A participant who prefers not to make a vocal sound may raise both hands or clap twice instead.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants start tossing items across the center of the circle.
- Pause the clock and restate the rule: items may only be handed or dropped to the immediate neighbor on your left or right.
- A participant freezes when holding two items simultaneously.
- Remind everyone that pileups are expected; prompt the participant to make the sound and prompt immediate neighbors to extend hands to take an item.
Terms used here
- Bottleneck: An accumulation where multiple items reach the same participant at the same time.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo collection; attributed on page to Mark Collard.
Retained core Playmeo mechanics: seated circle, soft items passed to neighbors, and an alert sound when holding multiple objects. UWT added structured timing (10 minutes), explicit item distributions, non-verbal alert adaptations, and debrief questions.
