United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Zero 1, 2, 3
Small groups take turns entering a long jump rope to complete an ascending progression: running through without jumping, then taking one, two, and three jumps before exiting.
10 minutes | 4 to 20 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice coordinated physical timing, rhythm, and group turn-taking through progressive jumping challenges.
Use it when: Use during active physical education sessions, recess stations, or movement breaks with sufficient open space.
Skip it when: Skip in low-ceiling or cramped indoor rooms, when floor surfaces are slick, or when physical jumping presents a barrier for the group.
Group arrangement: Small groups of 4 to 10 participants, each with 2 turners and a line of jumpers.
Timing: Playworks notes this activity runs under 10 minutes. UWT standardizes the run sheet to 10 minutes.
Materials and tools
- 1 long jump rope (12 to 16 feet) per group of 4 to 10 players
- Visual floor markers or cones to indicate the queue line and turning spots
Before participants arrive
- Clear a flat, non-slippery open area of at least 15 by 15 feet per rope.
- Set floor cones for the two turner positions roughly 10 to 12 feet apart.
- Place a marker 6 feet back from the rope for the waiting line.
Say this to open
Today we are playing Zero 1, 2, 3. Two players turn the rope in a steady arc. Jumpers line up to enter. On level Zero, your goal is to run straight through the turning rope without jumping or touching it. Next turn is level One, where you enter, take one jump, and exit. Then two jumps, then three. If you touch the rope, no problem; just return to line and try that same number next time. Let's form groups and set our first turners.
How to run it
Form groups and assign turners 2 minutes
Divide participants into groups of 4 to 10. Distribute one long rope per group. Designate two turners per rope. The remaining group members form a single file line behind the starting marker.
Demonstrate the entry and round zero 2 minutes
Model turning the rope in a wide, predictable arc. Demonstrate running under the rope at level Zero without jumping or making contact. Jumpers take turns one at a time. After each attempt, the jumper walks to the back of the queue.
Progress through levels one, two, and three 4 minutes
Jumpers progress individually. Once a player clears Zero, their next turn is level One (enter, one jump, exit). If successful, they advance to level Two, then level Three. If a player touches the rope or pauses the turn, they stay at their current level on their next turn. Rotate rope turners after every 2 to 3 minutes so everyone gets a chance to jump and rest.
Cool down and debrief 2 minutes
Signal stop and lay ropes on the floor. Gather the room to review how timing and communication helped the jumpers and turners stay in sync.
Debrief questions
- What did turners do that made it easier for jumpers to time their entrance?
- What cue helped you know the exact second to run into the rope?
Finished output: Every group completes multiple rotation cycles where participants attempt levels zero through three.
Remote
This is a physical long-rope activity requiring direct in-person coordination. It cannot be run online as designed. For a remote coordination warm-up, lead an on-camera rhythmic clapping game where participants match a visual meter.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not recommended. Remote participants cannot turn or jump a shared rope with in-person members.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may choose to act permanently as rope turners, cheerers, or rhythm counters without jumping.
- For participants working on low-impact movement, turners can keep the rope resting on the floor and wiggle it gently as a snake while players step across.
If the session gets stuck
- Turners spin the rope at uneven speeds, causing jumpers to trip or hesitate.
- Have the whole group chant a steady count like 'down, up, down, up' so the turners match speeds.
- Jumpers bunch up too close to the arc, risking getting struck by the rope.
- Use tape or a cone to set a firm waiting line at least six feet away from the rope arc.
Terms used here
- Level Zero: Running completely through the rotating rope without taking a jump or touching the rope.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playworks game library under the titles 'Zero 1, 2, 3' and 'School'.
Retained the core Playworks progression of running through (zero) followed by progressive jumps (1, 2, 3), group sizing of 4 to 10, and turner rotations. Replaced incorrect old metadata claiming this is a conflict-resolution activity. Added standard floor markers, a steady counting structure, and non-jumping participation roles.
