Simultaneous Chat Scattergories
Participants receive a target letter and category prompt, hold their answer in the chat box, and hit send together on a countdown. Matching answers cancel out, and unique responses earn points under an honor-system self-tally.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Compare creative thinking and surface shared vocabulary across a group using simultaneous text reveals.
Use it when: Use as a fast remote energizer or meeting warm-up when a team needs low-friction participation that avoids putting individuals on the spot.
Skip it when: Skip when participants dial in by audio only, cannot use a shared chat box, or during serious decision-making sessions where word games distract from high-stakes agendas.
Group arrangement: Individual play within one shared room
Timing: UWT suggested 15-minute standard block based on source 20-30 minute game description
Materials and tools
- Video meeting platform with a group text chat function
- Prepared list of 5 categories and target letters
- Scratch paper or digital note app for individual scorekeeping
- Smartphones or laptops for in-person attendees in hybrid settings
Before participants arrive
- Pre-load the 5 letter-and-category pairings into facilitator notes.
- Ensure all participants have access to the video call text chat and can type into it.
Say this to open
We are playing a fast round of chat-based Scattergories. For each prompt, you will get a target letter and a category. Think of an item that fits, type your answer into the chat, but do not hit enter until my countdown. When I say '3, 2, 1, send!', everyone submits at once. Unique answers get a point; identical answers cancel each other out.
How to run it
Introduce rules and demonstrate 3 minutes
Explain the simultaneous submission rule and scoring mechanic. Deliver an explicit example: if the letter is 'C' and the category is 'Breakfast Food', someone might write 'Cereal' while another writes 'Croissant'. If two people write 'Cereal', both get zero; 'Croissant' earns one. Explain that everyone checks the chat waterfall themselves and self-tallies one point for unique entries on scratch paper or personal notes. Spelling errors count if legible.
Run rounds 1 and 2 4 minutes
Announce prompt 1. Allow 20 seconds of silent typing without sending. Call '3, 2, 1, send!' The chat stream fills immediately. Give participants 15 seconds to scan the stream. Players who see their answer repeated cancel their score; players with unique entries award themselves 1 point. Designated spectators can assist by calling out duplicates spotted in the chat. Repeat this exact rhythm for round 2.
Run rounds 3 through 5 5 minutes
Run rounds 3, 4, and 5 using the established rhythm: announce prompt, allow 20 seconds for silent typing, and count down to reveal. Give 15 seconds after each reveal for participants to check duplicates and log their points. Keep the pace crisp.
Debrief and conclude 3 minutes
Ask 2 debrief questions to the whole room. Invite 2 or 3 quick verbal reactions or invite participants to share thoughts in the chat. Ask who reached top scores to celebrate unique thinkers, then conclude.
Debrief questions
- Which category produced the most duplicate answers, and why do you think our minds went there first?
- What was the most creative or surprising unique answer submitted today?
Finished output: A shared log of creative word responses in the chat stream with individual self-tallied scores.
Remote
Conducted in a single video call room. The facilitator pastes each prompt into the chat, monitors silence during typing, leads the countdown, and allows participants to scan the stream to self-tally.
Hybrid
All participants, including those in the physical room, join the call chat using laptops or smartphones. This ensures everyone's answers arrive in the single digital chat waterfall simultaneously for duplicate verification.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may choose to spectate and assist the facilitator by spotting duplicate matches in the chat rather than submitting answers.
- Anyone may pass on any round by simply leaving the chat bar blank during the countdown.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant accidentally hits enter before the countdown.
- Remind everyone that early answers cannot be copied by others without canceling out both players, then proceed with the countdown on schedule.
- Dispute arises over whether a niche word qualifies for the category.
- Give the group a five-second thumbs up or thumbs down vote via video reaction to accept or reject the entry quickly.
Terms used here
- Simultaneous Reveal: A technique where all participants compose answers silently and submit at the same instant to prevent copying.
