Turn and Talk

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Give every participant immediate speaking time to test thoughts on a prompt before speaking to the whole room.

Use it when: Directly after a short presentation or during a meeting lull to check comprehension and gather quick reactions.

Skip it when: Avoid when the group must make a formal binding group decision that requires visible consensus across all members at once.

Group arrangement: Pairs; one triad if total count is odd

Timing: UWT 7-minute standard delivery based on the 1 to 2 minute discussion recommendation in source evidence.

Materials and tools

• One visible countdown timer
• One display board or slide with the prompt written out

Before participants arrive

1. Write the discussion prompt clearly on a shared slide or whiteboard.
2. Check seating so each person knows who their shoulder partner is.

Say this to open

Turn to the person sitting next to you. I will display one prompt. You will each take roughly one minute to share your immediate thoughts on it. If we have an odd number, one group will form a trio.

How to run it

1. Prompt and pair 1 minutes

   Display the prompt. Direct participants to face their shoulder partner. If there is an odd participant, place them into an adjacent pair to form a group of three. State which partner speaks first.

2. Exchange perspectives 3 minutes

   Start the timer for three minutes. Signal halfway through at 90 seconds so the second person speaks. In trios, call time every 60 seconds. Walk the room to observe without interrupting.

3. Harvest sample points 2 minutes

   Call the room back to order. Invite 2 or 3 volunteers to state one idea they heard from their partner. Limit each response to 20 seconds.

4. Debrief the exchange 1 minutes

   Ask the room one debrief question to transition into the next working segment. Summarize common themes in 30 seconds.

Debrief questions

• What was one idea you heard that differed from your own starting thought?
• What question did this conversation raise that we should explore next?

Finished output: Verbal exchange completed by all pairs, producing 2 to 3 sample viewpoints reported back to the full group.

Remote

Put participants into automated breakout rooms of two people for 3 minutes. Post the prompt into the chat before opening rooms. Send a broadcast announcement at 90 seconds to switch speakers.

Hybrid

Pair in-person participants with adjacent room neighbors. Pair online participants into dedicated breakout rooms. Do not cross remote and in-person audio in individual pairs to prevent feedback.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may choose to write their response on scratch paper and read it or exchange written notes instead of speaking aloud.
• Any participant may opt out of sharing with the full room during the harvest step by simply passing.

If the session gets stuck

One person dominates the conversation time.

Announce the halfway chime firmly: 'Switch speakers now so the second person has equal floor time.'

An odd number of participants leaves one person sitting alone.

Immediately guide that person to join the nearest pair to form a group of three.
