United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
List Guessing Game
Teams write down two hidden responses to a topic prompt, then listen as an opposing team rapidly rattles off possible items to match those hidden answers.
10 minutes | 6 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Rapidly generate and compare items associated with an open-ended topic or category.
Use it when: Use during a training or review session to check recall and explore diverse angles of an open-ended operational question.
Skip it when: Skip when you need deep analytical debate or when the topic has a single rigid, factual answer.
Group arrangement: Parallel teams of 3 to 5 people
Timing: Thiagi GameLetter October 2014 specifies 5 to 10 minutes (best 7 to 8 minutes). Set to 10 minutes to allow full setup and scoring.
Materials and tools
- One index card or half-sheet of paper per team
- One pen or pencil per team
- One countdown timer
- Facilitator prompt sheet with distinct open-ended prompts
Before participants arrive
- Prepare distinct open-ended category prompts (one per team).
- Arrange room seating into separate small-group clusters of 3 to 5 participants.
Say this to open
We are going to play a rapid listing game. Each team will receive a different topic prompt. Your team has two minutes to pick exactly two strong responses and write them secretly on your card. After that, an envoy from each team will visit another group to see if that group can guess your secret items by rattling off a fast list.
How to run it
Assign Prompts and Draft Responses 3 minutes
Place participants into teams of 3 to 5. Hand each team a different topic card and blank paper. Direct teams to brainstorm responses and write down exactly two specific items on the paper, keeping them hidden from other teams. Stop everyone after 2 minutes of writing time.
Dispatch Envoys 1 minutes
Designate one envoy from each team. Instruct envoys to take their team's hidden list and move to the next team in rotation (Team A goes to Team B, Team B to Team C, and the last team to Team A). For two teams, simply swap envoys.
Rattle Off Guesses 4 minutes
The envoy reads only the topic prompt aloud to the host team, keeping the two written items covered. Set the timer for 3 minutes. The host team speaks aloud as many probable answers as possible. The envoy listens carefully, checking off either target item if the team says it or an equivalent phrase. Stop when time expires.
Reveal and Score 2 minutes
Ask each envoy to announce the two hidden responses and state how many their host team matched. Award one point per matched item. Announce the team totals and wrap up.
Debrief questions
- Which target answers came up instantly, and which were overlooked?
- What made certain answers hard to guess even when they fit the prompt well?
- How did rapid brainstormed listing shift the range of ideas compared to careful deliberation?
Finished output: Written target cards and recorded point tallies indicating matched brainstorm items.
Remote
Place each team into a separate breakout room. Send each room a private direct message containing their prompt. Each team writes their two target items in a private note. When the drafting phase ends, move one envoy into the adjacent room. In the main breakout room or channel, the host team uses spoken voice or chat to post rapid items within 3 minutes while the envoy tracks matches.
Hybrid
Keep in-person and online participants in distinct teams. An online envoy joins an in-person room via an individual tablet or laptop speaker, or an in-person envoy joins the remote breakout room using a dedicated station.
Access and participation choices
- Team members can call out guesses, scribe, or act as the traveling envoy based on personal preference.
- Any participant may choose to pass on speaking during the rapid-fire guessing round.
If the session gets stuck
- An envoy gives away the hidden answers through hints or body language.
- Remind envoys before the round starts that their job is strictly to listen and check items off, without confirming or nodding until time is up.
- Teams disagree on whether a guessed phrase matches a written target.
- Rule that reasonable facsimiles or synonyms count for full credit.
Terms used here
- Envoy: A team representative who carries the secret answers to another table to facilitate their guessing round.

The original newsletter issue (Thiagi GameLetter, October 2014) contains an article by Sivasailam Thiagarajan describing the 'Guessing Game' under Card Games. UWT adapted the activity into a standard 10-minute structured facilitation plan, clarifying envoy rotations, providing explicit prompt cards, adding accessibility adjustments, and formalizing the debrief.
