United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Tangles

A small subgroup holding a continuous loop of rope with restricted vision coordinates verbally to shape it into a square. The remaining participants observe decision patterns and share concrete feedback during debrief.

20 minutes | 7 to 16 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Examine emergent leadership, active listening, and collective verbal coordination under sensory constraint.

Use it when: Use during team workshops to highlight how groups organize, communicate instructions, and reach agreement without relying on sight.

Skip it when: Skip if there is not enough clear floor space, if participants do not want reduced-vision movement, or if the group meets online or across locations.

Group arrangement: One active team of 5 to 6 movers on the rope, while at least 2 remaining participants serve as silent observers and safety spotters (for example, 5 movers and 2 observers for 7 people; 6 movers and 10 observers for 16 people).

Timing: TrainerBubble outlines a 10-minute rope exercise; UWT expands to 20 minutes total to support safety briefings, role setup, shape inspection, and structured debriefing.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear a central floor space measuring at least 4 by 4 meters, removing loose bags, chairs, cables, and obstacles.
  2. Test the knot in the rope circle to confirm it remains secure under tension.

Say this to open

We will explore how teams coordinate when visual feedback disappears. We need 5 to 6 volunteers to hold this rope loop as movers. At least two people will act as observers and safety spotters. Movers will attempt to shape the rope into a square using verbal directions alone. Blindfolds are optional; you may close your eyes or fix your gaze on your shoes instead. Spotters, your main job is keeping movers clear of obstacles.

How to run it

  1. Assign roles and position rope 4 minutes

Recruit 5 to 6 movers to hold the rope circle. Reserve at least two participants as observers and spotters. In a group of 7, assign exactly 5 movers and 2 observers. In groups of 8 to 16, assign 5 or 6 movers and keep the rest as observers. Observers take an Observer Sheet and a pen. Movers choosing blindfolds put them on now; others gaze downward at their shoes. Deliver opening script. Remind spotters to say 'stop, step back' if anyone approaches a boundary.

  2. Form the square 10 minutes

Start the ten-minute timer. Movers talk, adjust hand positions and move slowly to shape the rope into four equal sides with right angles. They may release the rope whenever they wish. Observers note how decisions are made and intervene for hazards. When the team agrees on a square or time ends, ask everyone to stop moving. Movers remove any blindfolds, lower the rope carefully to the floor and step clear. Inspect the result with vision restored.

  3. Inspect shape and hear reports 3 minutes

Give movers 30 seconds to examine the resulting shape on the floor without speaking. Call on two observers to share one concrete item from their Observer Sheet describing how decisions were proposed and agreed upon.

  4. Debrief team communication 3 minutes

Facilitate a short discussion using the debrief questions. Invite two reflections from movers on how ideas were heard, how disagreements resolved, and what communication patterns helped or hindered collective alignment.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A rope outline placed on the floor for visual review, accompanied by documented observer notes analyzing team communication habits.

Remote

This rope exercise requires an in-person room. Choose a different exercise for a group meeting online.

Hybrid

Use another activity for a mixed-location session so everyone can join its central task.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Too many movers speak simultaneously, creating auditory chaos.
Allow the team to encounter the barrier for up to 90 seconds. If stalls persist, call a 20-second timeout for them to select a single coordinator or turn-taking protocol.
A mover wanders toward a boundary or nearby furniture.
Any nearby spotter immediately gives the vocal command 'stop, step back' to guide the mover back into the open zone.

Observer Sheet

Observe the movers silently. Record factual, observable behaviors:1. How did the group decide on their initial strategy?2. Did an informal leader emerge? How did peers respond?3. How were competing proposals reconciled?4. What spoken directions accelerated progress, and what caused confusion? The facilitator will call on two observers to share 1 concrete example during the inspection step.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in TrainerBubble under the title 'Tangles - Free Team Building Game'. Original authorship and creation date are unverified in the supplied sources.

UWT retains the source's rope-square task and observer feedback. This version limits the moving team to five or six volunteers, requires at least two observers, adds explicit stopping and release choices, and supplies an observation sheet. It is intended for an in-person room.
