Storytelling with Picture Prompts
Small teams connect four unrelated picture prompts into a single coherent narrative and share it with the whole room.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice collaborative synthesis by linking four distinct visual elements into a shared sequence.
Use it when: Use as a fast warmup before collaborative writing, scenario planning, or creative framing sessions.
Skip it when: Skip when participants must focus immediately on technical analysis or when visual aids create barriers that cannot be accommodated.
Group arrangement: Teams of 3 to 4 participants (up to 5 if needed for uneven counts)
Timing: 15 minutes total, matching source recommendation of 8 minutes for drafting followed by concise sharing.
Materials and tools
- Printed picture prompt sets (4 image cards per team)
- Lined scratch paper and pens for scribes (1 pad and 2 pens per team)
- Digital whiteboard or slides containing image cards for remote rooms
- Timer or visible clock
Before participants arrive
- Pre-sort image cards into packets of four distinct prompts per team.
- Distribute one prompt packet, scratch paper, and pens to each table.
Say this to open
You have four scene prompts on your table. Your team job is to connect all four into one coherent story. You can arrange them in any order and choose any genre. Pick a scribe to capture your outline and decide who will share your story, or prepare to paste it into the shared chat, in under 30 seconds.
How to run it
Introduce task and inspect prompts 2 minutes
Read the opening script. Direct teams of 3 to 4 (or 5 if numbers require) to inspect their four picture prompts. Teams select a scribe to record notes and agree on a presenter or chat delivery.
Construct the narrative 8 minutes
Teams spend 8 minutes ordering their four images and drafting a short narrative connecting them. The story must include all four prompt elements. Give a two-minute warning at minute 6.
Share stories across teams 4 minutes
Each team shares their story in under 30 seconds, either verbally or via text chat. Hear up to 6 teams in sequence. Keep strict time between presentations.
Debrief narrative synthesis 1 minutes
Ask the room the primary debrief question about connective devices (theme, character, or setting). Take two quick responses and close.
Debrief questions
- What connective device worked to bridge your prompts: theme, character, or setting?
- Where did your team spend the most time agreeing on the sequence?
Finished output: A short spoken, read, or posted story connecting four visual prompts, backed by written team notes.
Remote
Put participants into breakout rooms of 3 to 4. Provide a link to a shared digital board with a dedicated frame per breakout containing four pre-loaded prompt images. The scribe records notes directly on the board. Return to the main room and have representatives unmute to share or paste their synopsis into the chat.
Hybrid
Form fully in-person pods and fully remote pods to avoid split audio channels. In-person pods use printed cards; remote pods use the digital whiteboard. When sharing, project the remote team screen or display physical cards via a document camera.
Access and participation choices
- Provide clear text descriptions on every card alongside images for participants who prefer verbal cues.
- Team members can contribute ideas verbally or in writing without speaking during the final room presentation; teams may select a volunteer presenter or paste their narrative into a shared chat.
If the session gets stuck
- A team assumes images must be used in a strict left-to-right order.
- Remind them that prompt order is flexible and they can rearrange cards however their plot requires.
- A speaker continues past the allotted presentation time.
- Intervene politely at 30 seconds and ask for the final resolving sentence.
Terms used here
- Prompt Set: A pre-selected group of four images or text cues assigned to a team to inspire a single story.

Retained the four-picture mechanic, flexible prompt ordering, and prompt card sets from Icebreaker-Games.org. Structured into four timed steps totaling 15 minutes. Group sizing is set to small teams of 3 to 5 participants (capped at 6 teams for group_max 24) to ensure all teams can share their story within the allotted time. Added a sixth prompt set to cover full room capacity.
