United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Stadium Clap

The facilitator introduces a shared, synchronized celebration routine of three sharp claps. Participants practice the cue together so they can close future agenda items efficiently.

5 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Establish a rapid, synchronized group cue to acknowledge contributions and transition between session segments.

Use it when: Use when multiple speakers or small groups will present short updates and standard applause would drag out the agenda.

Skip it when: Skip when the meeting is quiet and reflective, or when sudden loud clapping creates sensory distress for participants.

Group arrangement: Whole group working in plenary

Timing: Evidence indicates under 5 minutes. Suggested UWT standard run time is 5 minutes.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Ensure all participants can see and hear the facilitator from their seats.

Say this to open

Throughout our session today we will hear lots of quick presentations. To celebrate each speaker without burning time on long applause, we are going to learn the Stadium Clap. On my cue, everyone claps three distinct times in unison. Let us try it together.

How to run it

  1. Demonstrate baseline applause 1 minutes

Ask the room to offer a standard round of applause for five seconds. Stop the applause and note how standard clapping trails off unevenly.

  2. Explain the stadium clap mechanic 1 minutes

Demonstrate the target pattern: call out 'Stadium Clap' followed immediately by three crisp, evenly spaced claps: 'clap, clap, clap'. Offer the alternative verbal tempo count '1, 2, 3' if the group needs an explicit cadence.

  3. Practice the synchronized response 2 minutes

Call out the cue 'Stadium Clap' and lead the room in the three claps. If the claps are ragged or staggered, repeat the exercise once or twice until the group hits the rhythm together cleanly. Stop after three attempts maximum.

  4. Agree on session use and close 1 minutes

Briefly confirm that the group will use this exact cue to conclude each upcoming presentation or report-out during the day.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A practiced, shared group routine ready to use across the meeting agenda.

Remote

Audio latency makes exact acoustic unison impossible over video conference calls. Have participants keep webcams on, stay muted to prevent chaotic echo, and perform three large visual hand claps or three synchronized jazz-hands motions on the facilitator's count.

Hybrid

In-room participants clap aloud while remote attendees perform three visual hand claps on camera or send three clapping emoji reactions in the chat stream simultaneously.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants clap at different tempos, sounding ragged.
Use a clear vocal lead-in such as 'Stadium Clap: one, two, three' while clapping your own hands in high view to provide a steady visual metronome.
A participant continues clapping after the third beat.
Keep your hands held still in the air immediately after beat three to signal a hard visual stop.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Relationship Makers Handbook, page 382. Original authorship is unattributed in the source text.

Retained the core mechanic from the Relationship Makers Handbook: standard applause contrast, verbal cue of 'Stadium Clap' or '1, 2, 3', and three synchronized claps practiced until uniform. Added structured 5-minute pacing, remote latency adjustments, accessibility choices for sensory or motor needs, and a brief debrief.
