United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Speed Networking People Science Style
Participants arrange themselves in two facing lines or concentric circles to hold three brief, paired conversations using specific work prompts. After each timed round, one line steps one position right to introduce pairs to new partners.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Exchange professional interests and relevant background with multiple peers across several short structured rounds.
Use it when: Use at the start of a cross-team gathering, kickoff, or conference where attendees need to discover mutual projects and skills quickly.
Skip it when: Skip when the group is smaller than four people or when the immediate goal requires prolonged, uninterrupted working discussions.
Group arrangement: Two parallel lines or concentric circles of paired participants. When the count is odd, one participant serves as assistant timekeeper for all rounds, or joins the facilitator as an active listener.
Timing: UWT suggested 15-minute format covering an introduction, three 3-minute dialogue rounds, and a brief whole-room harvest. Source mentions 30 to 60 minutes for larger groups.
Materials and tools
- One chime, bell, or digital timer for the facilitator
- One prompt card per person or a visible projection display showing the round prompts
- Pens or pencils (optional, for recording notes)
Before participants arrive
- Arrange chairs or standing space in two facing parallel lines or two concentric circles.
- Display the conversational prompts on a wall or screen, or place printed cards on seats.
Say this to open
We are going to complete three quick rounds of speed networking. Face the person directly opposite you. Each round lasts three minutes. You will discuss the displayed prompt, giving about ninety seconds to each partner. When the chime rings, I will prompt one line to step one position to their right to meet a new partner.
How to run it
Form lines and introduce round one 2 minutes
Direct participants to stand or sit facing a partner in two equal lines. If the count is odd, invite the extra person to co-facilitate as assistant timekeeper. Read the first prompt verbatim from the sheet: 'What is one project you are currently working on? What is one topic or skill you want to learn more about this quarter?' Give partners ten seconds to decide who speaks first.
Conduct round one 3 minutes
Start the timer. Partners split the three minutes, taking ninety seconds each. At ninety seconds, announce the midpoint check: 'Switch speakers now if you have not already.' Sound the chime when the full three minutes end.
Rotate and conduct round two 4 minutes
Direct Line A to stay in place. Direct Line B to step one space to the right, while the person on the far right end walks to the start of the line. Read prompt two verbatim: 'What is one professional tool, method, or resource that has made your work easier recently?' Run the round for three minutes, calling the ninety-second midpoint switch, and chime at the end.
Rotate and conduct round three 4 minutes
Ask Line B to step one space right again, wrapping the end person around. Read prompt three verbatim: 'What is an active challenge, question, or opportunity where an outside perspective would help you right now?' Run for three minutes with a ninety-second halfway call. Sound the chime to conclude the pairings.
Harvest key connections 2 minutes
Invite two or three volunteer participants to share an interesting insight or practical resource they learned about from a partner. Keep each whole-room share under forty-five seconds so the session finishes on time.
Debrief questions
- What common theme or unexpected shared interest emerged during your conversations?
- What is one concrete follow-up conversation you plan to schedule based on what you heard today?
Finished output: Each participant completes three targeted one-on-one conversations and identifies at least one practical contact or shared interest to follow up on.
Remote
Use a video platform with automatic breakout assignment. Post all three prompts in the shared chat in advance. Set breakout rooms to pairs and launch them for three minutes. Broadcast a text message to all rooms at ninety seconds reminding pairs to switch speakers. Recall everyone to the main room at three minutes, then click automatic reshuffle to create fresh random pairs for rounds two and three.
Hybrid
Keep in-person attendees paired with in-person colleagues in physical lines. Pair remote attendees with remote colleagues in dedicated digital breakout rooms. Run identical timing and chime cues across both cohorts.
Access and participation choices
- Provide chairs so participants can sit facing each other rather than stand for the duration.
- Participants may pass on answering any specific prompt and instead listen or discuss a neutral professional topic of their choice.
- Print prompts in large font or display on a screen for participants who prefer reading over spoken instructions.
If the session gets stuck
- One person in a pair dominates the conversation time.
- Announce a clear midpoint cue at ninety seconds: 'Halfway mark; please switch speakers so both voices are heard.'
- An odd number of participants leaves one person without a partner.
- Assign the extra person to serve as the assistant timekeeper who helps track the ninety-second midpoint calls for the entire room.
Terms used here
- Concentric circles: Two nested circular rings where participants in the inner ring face participants in the outer ring.
