Choose this exercise

Purpose: Recall familiar songs collaboratively and compare musical repertoires across a team.

Use it when: Use as a high-energy icebreaker or session reset to get people vocalizing and collaborating across different eras and styles.

Skip it when: Skip when participants need a quiet or reflective environment, or when the team prefers strictly text-based, non-musical activities.

Group arrangement: 2 to 4 teams of 3 to 6 participants

Timing: 15 minutes suggested by UWT based on the 5 to 10 minute brainstorm and scoring round in Teampedia source

Materials and tools

• 1 flip chart pad
• 4 markers
• 1 sheet of scratch paper and 1 pen per team
• 1 visual timer or stopwatch

Before participants arrive

1. Form 2 to 4 small teams of 3 to 6 people.
2. Give each team one sheet of scratch paper and a pen to log their songs.
3. Post a flip chart sheet visible to all teams to record round scores.

Say this to open

Welcome to Song Battle. In this game, your team will brainstorm real songs that contain one common word. You will have 5 minutes to list as many titles as you can. Then we will take turns singing the exact line containing our keyword. Pitch does not matter at all, and teams can sing together. Unique songs score one point, while songs claimed by another team cancel out.

How to run it

1. Announce prompt and rules 2 minutes

   Explain the rules using the opening script. Announce a common target word (for example, 'love', 'rain', or 'baby'). Clarify that songs must be real, published pieces. Anyone can opt to speak the lyrics or serve as the team scribe instead of singing.

2. Brainstorm songs in teams 5 minutes

   Start the 5-minute timer. Teams confer quietly and write down as many songs as possible containing the keyword. Remind teams that they must know the specific lyric line containing the word to claim it later.

3. Sing off and score unique songs 6 minutes

   Call time. Cycle turn-by-turn through the teams. Each team presents one song by having at least one member (or the whole team) sing or speak the line with the target word. If another team also has that title on their list, both teams cross it off with zero points. If the song is unique to that team, award 1 point on the flip chart. Continue taking turns until each team has presented up to 4 songs or time expires.

4. Debrief the exercise 2 minutes

   Tally the final points. Ask 1 or 2 debrief questions to the full group, taking 2 to 3 brief volunteer responses.

Debrief questions

• What did you discover about your teammates' musical tastes or generational knowledge?
• Which song surprised you the most when it came up?

Finished output: A shared flip chart list of verified unique songs and a final tally across teams.

Remote

Run in a main room with breakout rooms for the 5-minute brainstorm. Each team records songs in a private shared document. Bring everyone back to the main room for the sing-off, taking turns unmuting to perform the line. Track scores in a public chat or on a shared slide.

Hybrid

Pair in-person participants at physical tables and place remote participants together in a dedicated breakout room with their own shared scratch document. During the sing-off, ensure the remote room's audio plays through the room speakers, alternating turns strictly between physical tables and the online group.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may speak or chant the lyric rhythmically instead of singing.
• Participants can opt into non-vocal support roles such as team scribe, list checker, or scorekeeper without needing to justify their choice.

If the session gets stuck

A team invents a fake song or lyric on the spot.

Ask the opposing team if they verify it; if contested, do a quick 10-second smartphone check or ask the team to state the artist.

Participants feel embarrassed or reluctant to sing alone.

Remind everyone that group singing is encouraged, or let the person simply recite the lyric line out loud.
