United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Sociometry Workshop
Participants walk to positions along a floor spectrum, cluster into category corners, and step into an inward circle to map views and shared experiences. The facilitator logs counts and patterns on a board to guide a practical debrief on team alignment.
45 minutes | 6 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Map group alignment, shared experiences, and diverse viewpoints across physical space.
Use it when: Use during retrospectives, kickoff sessions, or strategy planning to show team alignment and divergent priorities without relying on written surveys.
Skip it when: Skip when team conflict is severe and exposing minority positions publicly creates immediate personal risk or retaliation.
Group arrangement: Whole group moving together in an open room, pairing or clustering into small groups for short discussions.
Timing: 45 minutes based on the core Spectrogram, Locogram, and Step-In sequence from the WorkshopBank framework.
Materials and tools
- 1 roll of painter's tape to mark spectrum ends on the floor
- 4 sheets of letter paper with Speed, Quality, Cost, and Innovation labels for room corners
- 1 whiteboard or flip chart with dry-erase markers for recording group distributions
- 1 digital countdown timer
Before participants arrive
- Clear chairs and tables to provide an open floor area.
- Tape a line across the floor with labels Strongly Disagree on one end and Strongly Agree on the other.
- Post four labeled category sheets (Speed, Quality, Cost, Innovation) in four distinct corners or wall stations.
- Position a whiteboard or flip chart where the facilitator can log group distributions in view of everyone.
Say this to open
Today we are mapping our views using physical space rather than slides. For each exercise, you will walk to the spot that reflects your experience or view. You do not have to justify your choice, and you can stay seated or pass at any time. Let us begin with a warm-up line across the room.
How to run it
Frame and warm up 5 minutes
Explain voluntary movement and pass options. Run a warm-up line: Morning person on the left and Night owl on the right. Ask everyone to step onto their chosen spot. Invite one volunteer from each end to share one sentence about their choice.
Run the Spectrogram 15 minutes
Read the prompt: 'Our team currently has clear priorities for next quarter.' Have participants place themselves along the line between Strongly Disagree and Strongly Agree. Tell participants to turn to a neighbor and share reasons for their chosen position for 2 minutes (in pairs, or a trio for odd numbers). Log the headcount spread on the whiteboard. Invite two volunteers from contrasting positions to share one sentence with the room.
Run the Locogram 10 minutes
Point out the four corners: Speed, Quality, Cost, and Innovation. Ask participants to walk to the corner that poses the greatest risk if neglected. Subgroups confer for 3 minutes. If someone stands alone, they note two bullet points or join the nearest group to listen. Log counts on the board. Ask each active corner to choose one speaker for a 30-second summary.
Run Step-In sociometry 10 minutes
Ask the room to stand in a circle facing inward. Read three prompts one at a time: 1. Step in if you joined this team within the past year. 2. Step in if you managed an unplanned urgent issue this month. 3. Step in if you regularly collaborate with people outside your department. Participants who say yes take one step forward, pause 5 seconds to observe, and step back. Log approximate step-in counts on the board.
Debrief and capture 5 minutes
Have participants return to their seats facing the distribution notes on the whiteboard. Facilitate a short plenary review using the debrief questions. Collect 2 to 3 observations on where team agreement is firm and where priorities differ.
Debrief questions
- Where did our group show clear alignment, and where did viewpoints diverge?
- What did the corner distributions reveal about competing work priorities?
- Which pattern from today should inform our next project planning meeting?
Finished output: A whiteboard summary recording participant distributions, key cluster themes, and shared takeaways across the three exercises.
Remote
Run on a virtual whiteboard platform. Draw a continuous line for the Spectrogram where participants drag named avatars, create four quadrant frames for the Locogram, and use camera toggles or digital raised-hand icons for Step-In sociometry.
Hybrid
Requires a dedicated co-facilitator. In-person participants stand in the room while remote participants place named digital tokens on a mirrored virtual whiteboard. The co-facilitator updates the physical whiteboard with remote counts and reads out online placements so both groups see the combined distribution.
Access and participation choices
- Participants with mobility restrictions or fatigue can point, hold up numbered cards (1 to 5), or place a marker on a printed tabletop diagram instead of standing.
- Any participant may remain seated, decline to step in, or pass on sharing their rationale without giving a reason.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants bunch in the middle to avoid taking a stand on the Spectrogram.
- Ask participants to eliminate the exact dead center: 'If you had to lean even two inches left or right, which direction would you choose?'
- A single participant stands alone in a corner during the Locogram and feels isolated.
- Normalize the solo position immediately: 'Standing alone shows a distinct perspective.' Give them the option to think independently or join the nearest corner as an observer.
Terms used here
- Sociometry: A method of mapping interpersonal choices, shared experiences, and opinions through spatial movement.
- Spectrogram: A linear scale marked on the floor where people stand to show degree of agreement.
- Locogram: A spatial grouping exercise where distinct room areas represent distinct categories or priorities.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in WorkshopBank as 'Sociometry'.
This run sheet adapts the 90-minute WorkshopBank 'Sociometry' workshop to a 45-minute format, focusing on its core Spectrogram, Locogram, and Step-In components, and omitting the optional Hands-on-Shoulder Sociometry. We added three concrete Step-In prompts, clarified corner materials, specified paired partner conversation tasks, and provided accommodations for solo corner participants.
