United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Social Capital Sentence
Participants write one to four distinct sentences about their skills, background, or personal interests, read them aloud, and answer inquiry questions in triads to discover shared resources.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: State personal resources and discover specific common ground across small groups.
Use it when: Use at the start of a multi-session project or cross-functional workshop when participants need quick insight into each other's backgrounds without long resumes.
Skip it when: Skip when a group already works closely together daily and knows each member's background, or when the group has fewer than 4 people.
Group arrangement: Triads or pairs; triads are preferred. Form one pair if numbers require it.
Timing: Source specifies 5 to 15 minutes. This 15-minute plan allows writing, two read-through cycles, and a brief room check-in.
Materials and tools
- Index cards or half-sheets of paper (1 per person)
- Pens or pencils (1 per person)
- Scratch paper (optional, for remote participants)
- Shared digital document table or digital whiteboard (for remote/hybrid formats)
- Timer or clock visible to facilitator
Before participants arrive
- Place index cards and pens at participant seats.
- Pre-arrange seats into clusters of three, or prepare group assignments.
- For remote or hybrid delivery, create and link a shared document table before the session.
Say this to open
Take an index card. You will write one to four separate sentences about yourself. These can cover your work, personal background, or a blend of both. Keep each sentence punchy and distinct. Do not write a continuous resume paragraph or cover letter bio.
How to run it
Draft individual sentences 3 minutes
Participants write 1 to 4 crisp sentences on their card. Example: 'I managed shipping logistics across the Midwest for four years. I restore vintage road bikes on weekends. I can troubleshoot database migrations.' Prompt anyone who finishes early to edit down long paragraphs into distinct lines.
First reading without discussion 3 minutes
Form triads (or pairs if numbers require). Each person reads their sentences aloud exactly as written, taking about 30 to 45 seconds each. Listeners do not interrupt, comment, or ask questions during this round.
Second reading and inquiry 6 minutes
Take turns rotating through the triad again. Each person reads their lines a second time. Their partners now ask short, specific questions about the sentences to uncover shared experiences, complementary skills, or mutual interests. Give about 2 minutes of focus per person.
Debrief shared connections 3 minutes
Bring the room together. Invite 2 or 3 volunteers to state one useful resource, skill, or shared interest they discovered in their triad.
Debrief questions
- What is one surprising skill or interest you discovered in your triad?
- How could the resources in your small group help with the project ahead?
Finished output: Completed index cards containing 1 to 4 personal resource sentences, kept by participants or compiled on a shared wall.
Remote
Facilitator provides a link to a shared digital document table. Participants write their sentences on personal scratch paper or directly into their assigned table row. Create breakout rooms of 3 people. Follow the same sequence: 3 minutes silent writing, 3 minutes uninterrupted reading in breakouts, 6 minutes for questions, then 3 minutes in the main room.
Hybrid
Facilitator provides a link to a shared digital document so all participants can optionally paste their sentences for the whole group to view. Group in-person participants with in-person partners and remote participants in virtual breakouts to prevent audio feedback.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may focus entirely on professional skills, entirely on hobbies, or a mix of both.
- Any participant may choose to pass on answering questions about specific personal details during round two.
- Written cards can be read aloud by the participant, or a partner may read the card on request.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant writes a dense professional summary instead of discrete sentences.
- Ask them to circle two specific facts or skills on their card and read only those two sentences aloud.
- The triad starts chatting during the first read-through, running out of time for everyone to read.
- Remind the room over the microphone that round one is listening only, and that partner questions happen in round two.
Terms used here

Sources and adaptation
Observed in Relationship Makers Handbook, pages 366-367.
The source text from Relationship Makers Handbook outlines writing 1 to 4 sentences (not a LinkedIn bio), a first pass of sharing without discussion, a second pass with discussion and questions, and grouping in pairs or triads. UWT added explicit time partitions across a 15-minute structure, defined clear turn guidelines for the two reading cycles, provided a concrete sentence example, and added standardized access options and debrief questions. Proprietary references to 'People Science' and 'Knowledge Weaver' from the source were omitted to maintain an independent facilitation plan.
