United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Snapshot Throwback
Participants share an old photo or describe a past snapshot in brief partner conversations. They take turns explaining the context and rotate partners once.
10 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Exchange short background stories between colleagues using personal or work-related photos as prompts.
Use it when: Use at the start of a meeting or workshop when team members benefit from learning low-stakes personal or professional background about one another.
Skip it when: Skip if team members do not know each other at all and personal history might feel intrusive, or in tight technical meetings where personal sharing is off-topic.
Group arrangement: Pairs; if an odd number is present, one trio forms.
Timing: 10 minutes matches the source duration and allows two pair rotations.
Materials and tools
- One physical or digital photo per participant (childhood, first job, or memorable trip), or a mental image of a memory
- Timer or chime for the facilitator
Before participants arrive
- Advise participants in advance to bring or find one photo on their phone or computer.
- Have ready prompt cards or a visible slide with the guiding questions.
Say this to open
Find one photo from earlier in your life or career. It could be your first job, a school day, or a memorable trip. If you do not have a photo handy, choose any clear memory to describe instead. You will pair up, show your image or name your memory, and take about one minute each to tell the story behind it. We will rotate once so you talk with two different partners.
How to run it
Form pairs and set prompt 2 minutes
Say the opening script. Ask everyone to ready their photo or decide on their memory. Form pairs. If the group has an odd number of people, create one trio. Display the prompt: What is happening in this photo, and why did you pick it?
Run conversation round one 3 minutes
Signal pairs to begin. Partner A shares their photo and backstory for about 75 seconds. Ring a chime at 75 seconds to prompt partner B to share for 75 seconds. If a trio formed, allocate 50 seconds per person.
Rotate and run round two 3 minutes
Ask participants to thank their first partner and switch to someone new. Signal the start of round two. Repeat the timed turns: 75 seconds for the first speaker, then 75 seconds for the second speaker.
Debrief in plenary 2 minutes
Call the whole room back together. Ask one or two debrief questions. Take two or three quick volunteer responses from the room.
Debrief questions
- What common themes or surprises came up across the photos you saw?
- How did seeing an early photo change or add to your view of someone?
Finished output: Two partner conversations completed per person, exchanging short formative or personal stories.
Remote
Use randomized 1-to-1 breakout rooms. Send a broadcast broadcast message at the midpoint of each round to switch speakers. Recall everyone to the main room, reshuffle pairs, and repeat for round two. Participants show their photo via webcam or screen share.
Hybrid
Pair in-person participants with in-person partners and remote participants with remote partners using breakout rooms. If numbers require a mixed pair, have the in-person participant use a laptop with headphones in a quiet corner.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may describe a memory without showing any picture.
- Anyone may choose a purely work-related photo, such as a first desk or first project badge, rather than a personal or childhood photo.
- Participants may pass on sharing personal details and focus on neutral aspects like the location, equipment, or clothes.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant does not have access to old photos on short notice.
- Remind them that describing a vivid memory or a recent picture with an interesting story works equally well.
- One partner dominates the time in the pair.
- Use an audible chime and broadcast an announcement at the halfway mark to instruct pairs explicitly to switch speakers.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Icebreaker-Games.org as 'Snapshot Throwback'. Original authorship is not specified.
Retained the core mechanic from icebreaker-games.org: bringing or uploading an old photo, sharing 1 to 2 minute stories in pairs, and rotating. UWT structured the timing into explicit 75-second speaking turns across two rounds to fit the 10-minute ceiling, established access provisions for participants without photos, and added clear hybrid pairing rules.
