United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Silly Dancing

Participants stand or sit in a circle and take turns demonstrating brief, playful dance gestures to music while everyone mirrors the current leader.

5 minutes | 4 to 12 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Provide a quick physical movement break to reset alertness between seated work sessions.

Use it when: Use when a group needs a physical shift and energy reset after sustained sitting or intense screen focus.

Skip it when: Skip when participants express physical fatigue, wear restrictive clothing, or work in shared spaces where music and movement disrupt adjacent rooms.

Group arrangement: Whole group standing or seated in a loose circle with arm's-length clearance.

Timing: UWT suggested duration of 5 minutes for an energizer. The source page listed 30 to 90 minutes, which is disproportionate for a simple follow-the-leader dance drill.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear chairs and tables to provide an open floor where every participant has space to extend both arms without contact.
  2. Queue the music track on the speaker and test volume levels.

Say this to open

We are taking a five-minute movement break. I will start the music and show a simple move that everyone will mirror. After about five seconds, I will pass the lead to the next person clockwise around the circle, or call out a name. You can offer any simple gesture, standing or seated, or say 'pass' to hand the lead immediately to the next person.

How to run it

  1. Set up circle and explain choices 1 minutes

Gather participants into a circle with arm's-length spacing. Deliver the opening script. State that participation is voluntary, movements can be standing or seated, and anyone may pass their turn by naming the next person.

  2. Start music and model first move 1 minutes

Start the music track. Facilitator demonstrates an initial simple move for roughly 5 seconds (for example, rolling both shoulders or tapping alternating feet). The whole group mirrors the move in rhythm.

  3. Rotate leadership across the circle 2 minutes

Pass leadership sequentially around the circle. Each participant leads for about 5 to 10 seconds while the room mirrors the movement. A leader may offer any small movement, like rolling wrists or nodding, or simply call out 'pass' to advance immediately. With group sizes up to 12, every participant gets a turn to lead within two minutes.

  4. Fade music and conclude 1 minutes

Fade the music track to a stop once the rotation reaches the starting point. Lead a brief round of applause and invite everyone to return to their working seats.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Completion of a full group follow-the-leader movement rotation.

Remote

Run in a video meeting. Play the music through computer audio sharing. Announce a predetermined turn order in chat so participants know who leads next. Active participants keep webcams on and mirror movements in front of their cameras. Participants who prefer to keep their camera off may follow along off-screen, understanding that their gestures will not be visible to the group and their leadership turn will be skipped.

Hybrid

Place an omnidirectional room microphone and camera so in-person and remote participants see one another. Alternate dance leads between in-room participants and remote video tiles. Transmit the music track through the room speakers and directly into the meeting platform audio feed so both groups hear equal volume without echo.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

A participant freezes or appears uncomfortable when their turn arrives to lead.
Remind the room that any small gesture counts, or say supportively: 'Feel free to pass the turn if you prefer.'
A participant holds the lead for too long, using up the round's allotted time.
Call out: 'Great rhythm! Let us pass it along to Sam next!' to maintain 5 to 10 second turns.

Sources and adaptation

Observed on Project of How (method HOW015), where it is attributed to Emelie Askfelt (created 2012).

Retained the core follow-the-leader dance rotation and music mechanic from Project of How. Adjusted the group cap to 12 so that the source requirement ('until everyone has been the leader') can be completed within a practical 5-minute energizer format. Added structured rotation timing (5 to 10 seconds per person), seated movement accommodations, opt-out protocols, and hybrid audio instructions.
