Crossword Debrief

Participants spell a word reflecting on a shared experience using alphabet cards or blocks, then collaborate to interlock their words into one shared crossword layout.

15 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Synthesize reflections on a completed project or workshop into single keywords and map their connections on a physical or digital grid.

Use it when: Use at the close of a workshop, team sprint, or shared event when people need a tactile, low-pressure way to name takeaways.

Skip it when: Skip when the debrief involves sensitive interpersonal conflict, grievance processing, or when the team needs granular, analytical root-cause documentation.

Group arrangement: Individual reflection, then small clusters of 4 to 8 combining words at tables or on a shared board.

Timing: Playmeo lists 5 to 15 minutes; 15 minutes provides adequate time for individual spelling, interlocking, and debrief.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Spread letter blocks or cards across a central table or floor space accessible to participants.
  2. Ensure ample table or floor surface area is clear for assembling the interlocking word grid.

Say this to open

Think back on our work today. In a moment, you will spell out one word that captures a key takeaway, feeling, or observation. Grab the letters you need from the pile. If you prefer, write your word on scratch paper first, then collect the tiles. Once everyone has a word, we will work together to link them into a single interconnected crossword puzzle.

How to run it

  1. Frame reflection and select letters 3 minutes

Display the reflection prompt (for example: What is one word that captures your experience in this project?). Invite each participant to reflect, choose a single word, and pick the required letter tiles or cards from the shared pile. For example, if someone reflects that the work required steady rhythm, they might choose P-A-C-E.

  2. Share words in clusters 3 minutes

Form tables or subgroups of 4 to 8 people. In round-robin fashion, each person displays their spelled word and gives a one-sentence explanation of why they chose it. Anyone may say pass or show their word without elaborating.

  3. Build the collaborative crossword 5 minutes

Each small group takes their individual spelled words and arranges them into a single intersecting crossword on the table or floor. Groups can share extra duplicate letters from the central pile if needed, or adjust letter order horizontally and vertically to intersect at common letters.

  4. Debrief patterns and intersections 4 minutes

Invite the room to pause and look at the completed crossword structures. Facilitate a brief discussion using two questions, taking 3 to 4 comments from the floor.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A completed, physical or digital interconnected crossword grid of team reflection keywords.

Remote

Run on a digital whiteboard (such as Miro or Mural) with a pre-populated bank of digital letter tiles or sticky notes containing individual letters. Participants claim tiles to build their word, share verbally or in chat, then collaboratively drag and snap words together into a single grid on the board.

Hybrid

Set up an online shared grid board for remote participants and a physical table with letter tiles for in-person participants. Assign one in-person volunteer to duplicate in-person words onto the digital board, allowing both cohorts to link their words into the shared digital layout visible on the main room screen.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

A participant cannot find the specific letters needed from the central pile.
Allow them to write missing letters on blank slips of paper or trade letters with a neighbor.
A word has no letters in common with any other word at the table.
Invite the group to brainstorm an auxiliary linking word from their shared experience that bridges the isolated word to the main grid.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library records, which attribute the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained the core mechanic from Playmeo (Mark Collard) using alphabet blocks/cards to spell reflective words and intersecting them into a puzzle. Added structured timeboxes, cluster grouping to support up to 24 participants, explicit neutral examples, and hybrid/remote instructions.
