The 60-Second Productivity Tip
Participants reflect on their personal workflow habits and share one practical tip in sixty seconds or less. The facilitator or a designated scribe captures the tips on a shared board to build a collective reference list.
15 minutes | 4 to 10 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Collect and record personal productivity practices across the group within a strict time limit.
Use it when: Use as an opening warm-up for a time management, workflow, or prioritization workshop.
Skip it when: Skip when the group needs to resolve serious interpersonal conflict, deep systemic blockers, or technical architecture before exchanging individual habits.
Group arrangement: Individual reflection followed by whole-room sharing in turn.
Timing: UWT suggested 15 minutes to allow up to 10 participants full 60-second turns alongside setup and debrief.
Materials and tools
- 1 flipchart pad or whiteboard
- Dry-erase markers or flipchart markers
- 1 visible countdown timer or stopwatch
- Sticky notes and pens for participants
Before participants arrive
- Write the heading 'Our Productivity Tips' at the top of the flipchart or whiteboard.
- Place pens and sticky notes near participants.
- Designate a volunteer scribe or prepare to capture notes yourself.
Say this to open
Welcome. We are starting with a quick round called The 60-Second Productivity Tip. You will each have two minutes to note down a specific habit, rule, or tool that helps you stay productive. Then we will hear from each person in 60 seconds or less and capture the ideas on our board. You are also welcome to pass or share an idea you want to try.
How to run it
Introduce prompt and frame task 1 minutes
Deliver the opening script. Explain the 60-second limit and note that sharing is optional. Confirm who will scribe notes on the board.
Draft personal tips silently 2 minutes
Direct participants to spend two minutes silently writing down one concrete tip on a sticky note. For example: 'I close my email client during the first 90 minutes of the day to finish deep work.' Give a 30-second warning before time ends.
Share tips in turn 10 minutes
Start with a volunteer and move around the circle. Run a visible timer set to 60 seconds for each person. Each speaker shares their tip in under a minute. The scribe notes each tip on the board in 3 to 6 words. Anyone may pass or have the scribe read their sticky note aloud without commentary.
Review themes and debrief 2 minutes
Ask the room to look at the completed list. Invite up to three participants to respond to the debrief questions before moving into the next session topic.
Debrief questions
- Which tip on this board addresses a challenge you currently face?
- What patterns or common themes do you notice across our individual habits?
Finished output: A visible flipchart or whiteboard list of actionable productivity tips generated by participants.
Remote
Use a shared digital whiteboard or presentation slide with a visible countdown timer widget. Post the speaker order in the meeting chat. Call on each person in order to unmute for 60 seconds while typing their tip directly onto the board. Participants who prefer not to speak may paste their tip into chat.
Hybrid
Seat in-person participants facing the room camera and display. Remote attendees post tips in the chat or speak over room audio. The facilitator mirrors remote contributions to the physical board and keeps the chat visible to the room.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may hand their written sticky note to the scribe or paste it in chat instead of speaking aloud.
- Passing is completely acceptable; participants may simply state 'pass' when called upon.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant speaks past the 60-second limit.
- Gently call time when the timer rings, summarize the core point onto the board, and hand the turn to the next person.
- Multiple participants share the exact same tip.
- Add a checkmark or tally next to the existing entry on the chart to show consensus, then ask if they have a slight variation.
Terms used here
- Scribe: A designated person who writes short notes on the shared board so the speaker can focus on talking.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in a workshop agenda titled 'Reduced Productivity' published on WorkshopBank.
The source outline from WorkshopBank provides a workshop agenda titled 'Reduced Productivity' with an opening icebreaker called 'The 60-Second Productivity Tip'. The source assigns 10 minutes for an unspecified group size. To keep the defining 60-second mechanic workable for up to 10 participants without rushing, UWT adjusted the total run time to 15 minutes (1 minute introduction, 2 minutes silent drafting, 10 minutes sharing, and 2 minutes debrief) and added explicit facilitation controls, accessibility choices, and debrief prompts.
