United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Rain Maker

Participants make subtle physical gestures together, shifting from rubbing palms to one-finger clapping to build the collective sound of falling rain.

5 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Demonstrate how individual quiet actions combine into a distinct collective sound.

Use it when: Use at the start of a meeting or after a long seated presentation to refocus attention without equipment.

Skip it when: Skip when the group includes participants for whom hand-rubbing or clapping is uncomfortable or impossible, unless adapted with alternative noisemakers.

Group arrangement: Whole group standing or seated together

Timing: Observed in source as under 5 minutes; allocated 5 minutes for a full build, fade, and brief reflection.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Ensure all participants have space to move their hands freely without bumping neighbors.

Say this to open

We are going to create a collective sound using only our hands. Watch what I do and mirror the motion without speaking. We will start with a light rustle and build a rainstorm together.

How to run it

  1. Start the wind 1 minutes

Facilitator models rubbing palms together in a steady circular motion. Signal for the entire group to join in. Maintain this sound until everyone is synchronizing the gentle rustling sound.

  2. Build light drops 1 minutes

Without speaking, facilitator switches to tapping the index finger of one hand against the index finger of the other hand (or against the opposite palm). Nod toward one half of the room to switch first, then gesture for the other half to join in, creating light raindrops.

  3. Crescendo and fade 2 minutes

Facilitator adds a second finger, then three fingers, or a light full-palm clap to build the downpour. After 30 seconds of peak sound, gradually reduce back down: two fingers, one finger, palm rubbing, and finally bring hands to a rest in complete silence. Let the silence hang for 5 seconds.

  4. Reflect on collective sound 1 minutes

Ask the group 1 or 2 quick questions about what they heard. Invite 2 or 3 brief comments before returning to the main agenda.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A shared auditory pattern produced by the group, ending in collective silence.

Remote

Have everyone unmute their microphones. Be aware that web conferencing noise cancellation will suppress steady sounds like rubbing palms or light tapping; instruct participants to temporarily turn off background noise suppression in their audio settings, or perform the exercise focusing on the visual unison with gallery view open.

Hybrid

In-person participants create the physical acoustic sound while remote participants keep webcams on and mirror the motions. Use the in-person room microphone to pick up the collective sound for online attendees.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants start clapping loudly right away instead of keeping the quiet, gradual buildup.
Exaggerate the quiet nature of the prompt by whispering and modeling very small, deliberate fingertip taps.
Audio suppression software cuts out the sound in a virtual room.
Acknowledge the limitation and direct participants to watch gallery view to observe the visual wave of movement across video tiles.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Relationship Makers Handbook, page 334.

Retained the progressive sequence from rubbing palms to one-finger tapping and building sound from the Relationship Makers Handbook evidence. Added structured time breakdown, explicit crescendo and decrescendo cues, and accessibility choices for participants with hand mobility limits.
