United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
One Minute Debrief
Participants spend thirty seconds thinking silently before offering rapid spoken or written takeaways within a strict sixty-second timer. The facilitator listens without evaluating and summarizes the main themes.
4 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Gather brief participant impressions on a single prompt within sixty seconds.
Use it when: Use at the conclusion of a meeting, workshop segment, or training exercise when time is short and the room needs a quick pulse check.
Skip it when: Skip when the session uncovered interpersonal conflict, complex system failures, or unresolved decisions that require deep analysis.
Group arrangement: Whole group in a circle or facing the facilitator; popcorn sharing or chat entry.
Timing: Based on the 60-second core timer documented by Playmeo, with setup, silent formulation, and wrap-up totaling 4 minutes.
Materials and tools
- One visible countdown timer or stopwatch
- One flip chart or whiteboard and marker (optional, for noting themes)
- Digital chat or shared virtual whiteboard (for remote or hybrid delivery)
Before participants arrive
- Write the single reflection prompt clearly on the board or prepare it in chat.
- Set the countdown timer to exactly 60 seconds.
Say this to open
We have four minutes left, and we will do a One Minute Debrief. I will give you one prompt and thirty seconds to choose your thought. Then I will start a sixty-second countdown. During that minute, anyone who wants to speak can call out a short phrase or sentence. When the timer hits zero, the sharing stops. Speaking is optional.
How to run it
Introduce prompt and frame time limit 1 minutes
State the single prompt clearly. Write it where everyone can see it. Explain that the shared speaking phase lasts exactly 60 seconds and no one has to speak.
Pause for silent preparation 1 minutes
Give participants 30 to 45 seconds of silence to settle on one word or short sentence. Ask them not to speak until the timer starts.
Run sixty-second response window 1 minutes
Start the 60-second timer. Invite participants to call out or post their thoughts popcorn-style. Keep responses to brief phrases without commentary or debate. Stop promptly when the timer sounds, even if people are mid-thought.
Acknowledge themes and close 1 minutes
Summarize two or three shared themes or contrasting points heard during the minute. Thank the group and end the session.
Debrief questions
- What common themes or patterns did you hear in that sixty seconds?
- Which single comment stood out to you as most relevant to our next step?
Finished output: A rapid spoken or typed list of participant takeaways captured within one minute.
Remote
Display the prompt on screen. During the silent phase, participants type their response into chat without pressing Enter. When the facilitator starts the 60-second timer, participants send their chat messages in a cascade, or take turns unmuting to speak short phrases.
Hybrid
In-room participants sit facing the shared screen and microphone. During the 60-second timer, alternate between one room participant speaking and the facilitator reading one chat comment aloud from remote participants, keeping the pace brisk.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may pass entirely without explanation.
- Participants may submit thoughts in writing via chat, note card, or whiteboard instead of speaking aloud.
If the session gets stuck
- One participant gives a long monologue that consumes half the timer.
- Gently interrupt: 'Pause there so others have room on the clock. Give us just the headline phrase.'
- Silence fills the room when the timer starts.
- Let the silence run without rescuing the group. Silence is a valid outcome of the sixty seconds.
Terms used here
- Popcorn-style: Unstructured turn-taking where participants speak up spontaneously as thoughts arise, rather than going around in order.
Sources and adaptation
Observed on Playmeo, where the activity is attributed to Mark Collard.
The original Playmeo activity by Mark Collard specifies assembling the group, stating one or two questions, running a 60-second timer, and observing the gist. UWT added a short silent thinking window to prevent snap pressure, explicit turn limits to fit up to 24 participants, and concrete hybrid management.
