Toe Tag
Pairs stand back to back, turn around on a cue, and try to gently tap the top of each other's shoe with their own foot. The first person in each pair to reach three points wins the round.
5 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Raise physical alertness and shift room energy through a brief, lighthearted reaction game.
Use it when: Use during a workshop transition, after long seated sessions, or to break up passive listening.
Skip it when: Skip when participants have mobility or balance constraints, when the room is crowded or slippery, or when people wear open-toed shoes.
Group arrangement: Pairs; an odd person can serve as referee and caller or rotate into a trio with alternating duelists.
Timing: UWT suggested 5-minute schedule based on quick partner tag format
Materials and tools
- No special materials.
Before participants arrive
- Clear chairs, cables, and bags to ensure an open floor with secure footing.
- Check that all participants have closed-toe footwear suitable for light movement.
Say this to open
Find a partner and stand back to back with at least an arm's length between your pair and the next pair. When I call go, turn around and try to gently tap the top of your partner's shoe with your foot before they tap yours. Keep it light, like touching a leaf. The first tap scores a point. First to three points wins the round.
How to run it
Pair up and review safety 1 minutes
Direct participants to find a partner and stand back to back. If there is an odd participant, designate them as caller and referee. Remind everyone that taps must be light and soft, with no stomping or kicking.
Play first match to three 2 minutes
Call 'Ready, set, go!' Each pair turns and tries to gently tag their partner's shoe. When someone scores a point, the pair resets back to back. Partners keep score until one person reaches three points.
Switch partners and rematch 1 minutes
Have everyone take two steps away and pair up with a new person standing nearby. Run a second match to three points using the same rules.
Group reset and wrap-up 1 minutes
Call time and bring the whole room back to attention. Take one or two brief observations from volunteers before moving into the next seated agenda item.
Debrief questions
- What strategy helped you tag without getting tagged first?
- How did that quick burst of movement change your alertness level?
Finished output: Every pair completes one to two quick scoring rounds to reset physical energy.
Remote
Toe Tag requires physical proximity and cannot be run online as a tag game. For a remote alternative with identical timing and alert-response mechanic, play Screen Mirror or Reaction Tap: pairs open cameras, hold hands just off camera, and on a verbal audio cue race to touch both palms flat to their screen. The first person to show flat hands on the gallery view earns the point.
Hybrid
Keep in-person participants paired together in the room. Remote participants pair up in video breakout rooms or take turns dueling on main camera using the remote reaction game.
Access and participation choices
- Participants who prefer not to run or pivot can serve as game callers, timekeepers, or score referees.
- Pairs can play a seated hand-reaction version (such as palm-tap or thumb wrestling) to accommodate seated needs or footwear limits.
- Any participant may opt out without explanation by stepping to the side as an observer.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants kick or stomp aggressively.
- Pause the game immediately. Demonstrate a soft tap using the sole of the shoe and state that any hard kick gives an automatic point to the partner.
- Participants collide with nearby pairs.
- Freeze the game and spread pairs further apart across the room perimeter before restarting.
Terms used here
- Tag: A light, controlled touch on the top of a shoe using your own foot.
Sources and adaptation
Observed on Playmeo, where it is attributed to Mark Collard.
Retained the core Playmeo rules: pairs stand back to back, turn on signal, attempt to tag the other's toes, and first to three points wins. UWT added explicit safety guidelines regarding soft taps, partner rotation, caller roles for odd numbers, and a seated or remote reaction alternative.
