Choose this exercise

Purpose: Track group workshop predictions and patterns using playful, low-stakes token wagering.

Use it when: At the start of a multi-hour or multi-day workshop where small teams need an ongoing observational thread across the day.

Skip it when: High-stakes meetings with acute interpersonal conflict, or settings where wagering dynamics cause discomfort.

Group arrangement: Teams of 3 to 6 participants

Timing: UWT suggested structure: 10 minutes setup and placement at the start, 8 minutes reveal and tally at the end of the session.

Materials and tools

• 20 play tokens, poker chips, or counters per team
• Extra reserve of 50 play tokens held by the facilitator as a central payout pool
• 1 small dish or cup per team
• 1 prediction slip per team
• 1 sealing envelope per team
• Pens or markers

Before participants arrive

1. Count 20 tokens into a small dish or cup for each small team table.
2. Place the central reserve of extra tokens with the facilitator.
3. Provide one prediction slip and envelope per table.

Say this to open

Every workshop has predictable rhythms and recurring themes. Today each table receives 20 tokens to bet on workshop occurrences. You will choose events from the list or write your own, decide how many tokens to risk on each, and seal your card in an envelope. We will open them at the end of the session to see which predictions occurred.

How to run it

1. Introduce prediction rules and categories 3 minutes

   Explain the rules: bets must focus on agenda progress, workshop milestones, shared group patterns, or facilitator habits, never mocking or monitoring individual participants. Give a concrete neutral example: betting 5 tokens that the phrase 'best practice' is spoken 3 or more times before lunch, or betting 8 tokens that the room completes the morning agenda ahead of schedule. Each table takes 20 tokens from their dish.

2. Select bets and allocate tokens 7 minutes

   Small teams confer in private. They choose 2 to 4 predictions from the prompt list or write their own neutral event predictions. Teams allocate their 20 tokens across their chosen predictions. The recorder writes down the bets and token amounts on the Prediction Card and seals it inside the team envelope. Teams keep the envelope at their table. The workshop then proceeds as scheduled outside this exercise clock.

3. Open envelopes and verify occurrences 6 minutes

   At the conclusion of the workshop, reconvene the teams. Each team opens its envelope and announces one or two bets that either occurred or missed. Confirm events by general group assent. If a predicted event occurred, the team keeps its wagered tokens and receives matching tokens from the facilitator's reserve bank. Limit each team's report to 45 seconds.

4. Debrief patterns and wrap up 2 minutes

   Lead a brief whole-room debrief using one question. Hear from 2 or 3 participants. Collect the tokens, dishes, and envelopes.

• Which predictable patterns in our sessions help our focus, and which slow us down?
• What surprised you about what actually occurred today versus what your team expected?

Finished output: A sealed prediction sheet with token allocations, verified and tallied at the close of the session.

Remote

Use video breakout rooms for small groups to discuss predictions. Teams record their 20 tokens across 2 to 4 predictions and submit their prediction slip as a private direct message or locked document to the facilitator, which serves as their sealed envelope until the reveal. At the end of the session, the facilitator or team rep reads out the bets in the main room to confirm results.

Hybrid

In-person teams use physical envelopes and tokens. Remote teams work in a private breakout room and submit their prediction slip to the facilitator via private chat as their sealed record. Both in-person and remote predictions are read aloud during the final verification step, with tokens tracked on a shared digital counter.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may opt out of wagering discussions and serve as neutral verification witnesses.
• Teams can pass on sharing specific predictions publicly if they prefer to tally privately.

If the session gets stuck

Teams write personal, embarrassing, or unkind predictions about colleagues.

Intervene during group selection and remind everyone that bets must focus strictly on shared agenda topics, industry jargon, or overall team milestones.

Teams disagree on whether a predicted event actually occurred.

Apply a simple majority vote by show of hands to decide whether the condition was met. If split, rule it as a tie with tokens returned.
