Span the Room

Teams create an unbroken physical chain between two fixed points using their bodies, then hold the connection for five seconds under constraints that reduce contact points with the floor.

15 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Coordinate physical space, contact points, and group movement to solve an embodied spatial puzzle.

Use it when: Use when an in-person group needs active physical coordination and quick collaborative planning in an open room.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have mobility limitations, when close physical proximity causes discomfort, or in virtual settings.

Group arrangement: Small teams of 4 to 8 participants working along dedicated wall-to-wall or line-to-line lanes

Timing: UWT 15-minute plan based on the 5 to 15 minute range observed in source materials.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Identify two opposing anchor boundaries (such as walls, taped floor lines, or trees) set roughly 4 to 8 meters apart depending on team size.
  2. Ensure the floor area between boundaries is clear of furniture and slip hazards.

Say this to open

In this activity, your team must build an unbroken bridge between these two boundaries. Every person in your group must be part of the connection, touching at least one teammate. At least one person must touch the starting boundary, and at least one person must touch the ending boundary. Once set, your group must hold the connection steady for five seconds.

How to run it

  1. Set boundaries and explain constraints 3 minutes

State the rules and boundaries. Divide the full group into teams of 4 to 8 people. Point out each team's two boundary lines. Note that physical touch is optional; participants may link by holding opposite ends of a strap, touching fingertips, or placing a foot next to another. Give teams one minute to plan before moving.

  2. Attempt standard span 4 minutes

Teams position themselves to span the distance between their two boundaries. The chain must be unbroken from start boundary to end boundary. When a team calls that they are ready, count down 5 seconds out loud. Confirm that all members are part of the chain and that the connection holds for the entire count.

  3. Introduce ground-touch constraints 5 minutes

Announce a rule reduction: teams must now bridge the same distance while limiting total body parts touching the floor. For example, announce that a 5-person team may only have 6 feet and 2 hands on the floor total. Give teams 2 minutes to test body positions and balance. Call and verify official 5-second holds.

  4. Debrief group coordination 3 minutes

Bring teams together standing or seated. Ask two focused questions about planning versus execution. Take two or three quick observations from volunteers.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A successfully held 5-second bridge spanning the designated distance under stated body-contact limits.

Remote

This activity requires shared physical space and cannot be run online as designed. For a remote problem-solving alternative with comparable collaborative mechanics, run an online grid puzzle or collaborative whiteboard map.

Hybrid

Span the Room is strictly an in-person physical exercise. Remote members cannot participate in the physical chain. If running in a hybrid meeting, assign remote participants active observer roles using a roving camera, tracking contact counts and timing official 5-second holds.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

The distance is too wide for the team size to span safely without overstretching.
Adjust the boundary lines closer with painter tape to match the physical reach of the group.
Participants feel awkward or unsafe holding onto teammates.
Remind participants immediately that simple light touches, touching shoes, or holding a shared pen or lanyard satisfies the unbroken connection rule.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo records, which attribute the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained core Playmeo rules: bridging space between two points, five-second hold rule, and progressive limits on floor contact points. UWT added explicit team sizing, boundary spacing guidelines, painter tape materials, safe touch modifications, and observer roles.
