Capture the Flags
Two teams protect their home bucket while crossing into opponent territory to retrieve flags and eliminate players using tags or soft tossables. Play concludes when one team captures all opposing flags, eliminates all opposing players, or time expires.
35 minutes | 6 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Coordinate defensive and offensive movement across a divided field under active physical constraints.
Use it when: Use during energetic outdoor team sessions where participants have sufficient space and mobility for running, dodging, and tactical coordination.
Skip it when: Skip when working in confined indoor rooms, on uneven or hazardous terrain, or with groups containing members who cannot safely participate in fast tagging or dodging games.
Group arrangement: Two equal teams (3 to 12 players per side). If the total number is odd, allocate the spare participant as a neutral referee or field-line monitor.
Timing: Source specifies 20 to 40 minutes of game play. UWT sets a structured 35-minute plan including rules briefing, strategy, play, and debrief.
Materials and tools
- 2 large buckets (one per team)
- 6 to 10 identifiable fabric flags or colored bandanas (divided equally between teams, e.g., 3-5 red, 3-5 blue)
- 10 to 16 soft tossables such as foam dodgeballs, fleece balls, or beanbags (divided equally)
- Field marking cones or boundary tape to establish the center dividing line and perimeter
- 1 whistle or loud horn for starting and stopping play
Before participants arrive
- Substantial setup required: Measure and mark a large open field (recommended at least 30 by 50 yards) with clear outer boundaries and a distinct center line dividing the field into two equal halves.
- Place one bucket at the far back boundary of each half.
- Place each team's set of flags inside their respective bucket.
- Distribute half of the soft tossables to each team's side before participants arrive.
Say this to open
Welcome. Today we are playing Capture the Flags. Each team has a home safe zone, a bucket with flags at the back, and a supply of soft tossables. Your goal is to cross into opponent territory, grab their flags, and return them to your bucket. In your opponent's half, you can be tagged out. In your own half, you are safe from tags, but opponents can throw soft tossables across the line to eliminate you. If you are tagged or hit, drop any flag you hold and walk to the sideline boundary to observe or act as a scout.
How to run it
Explain rules and safety boundaries 5 minutes
Gather the group at the center line. Explain the boundaries, the role of the buckets, and the two elimination rules: you are out if tagged in opponent territory, or if hit below the shoulders by a soft tossable while in your own half. Clarify that any dropped flag or grounded tossable can be recovered by anyone. Assign roles to non-running participants (line judge, scorekeeper).
Divide teams and plan tactics 5 minutes
Divide participants into two balanced teams. Send each team to their home bucket. Give teams 5 minutes to agree on roles: runners to capture flags, defenders to tag intruders, and throwers to target opponents across the line.
Play Capture the Flags 20 minutes
Sound the whistle to begin play. Teams run, tag, throw, and retrieve flags according to the rules. If a runner holding a flag is tagged, they must drop the flag immediately at that exact spot and exit to the sideline. Grounded flags and tossables remain live. End the game when one team retrieves all opposing flags into their bucket, eliminates all opponents, or when 20 minutes elapse. If time expires, the team with the most opponent flags in their bucket wins.
Debrief team coordination 5 minutes
Reconvene the full group at the center line. Ask participants to reflect on tactical communication and role distribution. Take two or three brief comments from each team.
Debrief questions
- How did your team balance attacking to get flags versus defending your own half?
- When a teammate was eliminated, how quickly did your group adjust its strategy?
- What method of communication worked best once players spread across the field?
Finished output: Completion of a tactical team competition with a clear score based on retrieved flags or remaining active players.
Remote
This physical outdoor tagging and throwing game cannot be run directly online without changing its defining mechanics. For an online tactical alternative, run a digital tabletop grid simulation where small breakout teams command runner and defender tokens on a shared spreadsheet or virtual whiteboard grid.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not recommended. Remote participants cannot participate equally in real-time physical tagging. If hybrid is unavoidable, assign remote participants as tactical coaches who view the field via mobile video and call strategic shifts to team captains during a mid-game timeout.
Access and participation choices
- Participants with limited running mobility can take static throwing roles, bucket defense roles, or serve as sideline flag monitors and line judges.
- Any participant may choose to pass on active running or tag play at any point by stepping to the sideline to track score.
If the session gets stuck
- Disputes arise over whether a tag occurred or whether a tossable hit counted.
- Enforce the honor system before starting: if you feel contact or doubt arises, accept the tag and step to the sideline. Facilitators and sideline line judges make final calls on disputed plays.
- Defenders surround their bucket tightly, making flag retrieval impossible.
- Enforce a 3-yard exclusion zone around the bucket where defenders may not linger unless actively pursuing an offensive runner inside that zone.
Terms used here
- Soft tossable: Lightweight, harmless throwable objects such as foam balls, fleece balls, or soft beanbags used for target tagging.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo library entries attributed to Mark Collard as an outdoor strategy and team game.
Retained the primary game mechanics from the Playmeo source: two equal field halves, flags held in rear buckets, soft tossables, elimination via tagging in enemy territory, and elimination via tossable hits in the home zone. Added explicit boundary safety specifications, role allocations, an honor system rule, structured tactical planning time, and debrief prompts.
