United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Name Impulse

Participants form a circle and send their names rapidly around the perimeter in sequence. The facilitator times the circuit across multiple attempts as the group aims to improve their speed.

8 minutes | 6 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Rehearse everyone's preferred name aloud in rapid succession.

Use it when: At the start of a meeting or workshop when participants need a quick warm-up to hear and speak each other's names.

Skip it when: When participants prefer not to be put on the spot with timed speaking drills, or in very large lecture formats where forming circles is impractical.

Group arrangement: Single circle (seated or standing)

Timing: UWT suggested 8-minute run time (expanded from source under-5-minute summary to allow practice rounds and directional switch).

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Arrange chairs in a circle with clear sightlines, or ask everyone to stand in a circle.

Say this to open

We are going to pass a wave of names around our circle as fast as we can. When it reaches you, speak your name clearly, and the person next to you will immediately say theirs. Let us do one practice round first to set the sequence.

How to run it

  1. Establish the sequence 2 minutes

Explain the rules using the opening script. Run one un-timed practice circuit starting with the person to your left. Each person says their chosen name in turn until it returns to you. Ensure everyone knows their turn order.

  2. Timed clockwise round 2 minutes

Announce that you will time the wave. Start the stopwatch as the first person speaks. The impulse travels clockwise from person to person. Stop the timer when the last person finishes. Announce the elapsed time.

  3. Reverse direction challenge 2 minutes

Reverse the direction so the impulse moves counter-clockwise to the right. Challenge the group to beat their previous time while keeping every name distinct and audible. Run two quick rounds in this direction.

  4. Review and close 2 minutes

Conclude the exercise by recognizing the best recorded time. Transition with one brief reflection prompt.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Every participant's name spoken aloud multiple times and a recorded baseline circuit time.

Remote

Display an agreed turn-order list on a shared slide or in the meeting chat. The first named person un-mutes, speaks their name, and immediately calls the name of the next person on the list. The facilitator times the full sequence from first call to last.

Hybrid

Establish a single combined speaking roster that alternates between in-room and remote participants. Project the list clearly so in-person participants know when to speak and remote participants can cue off the in-room speaker.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Names become blurred or unintelligible as speed increases.
Add a rule that a round only counts if the facilitator can clearly hear each individual syllable.
A participant freezes under the pressure of the stopwatch.
Remind everyone that pauses are fine and let nearby peers gently whisper a prompt if requested.

Observed on Playmeo, where the activity is credited to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo name-passing sequence, timing mechanic, and directional switch. UWT established an 8-minute breakdown with explicit practice, timing, access alternatives (timekeeper role), and remote list-calling protocol.
