Luminaria Circle

Participants decorate small paper bags with words or symbols representing a shared theme, weight them with sand, and light them with tea lights in a darkened circle. Each person may speak about their lantern or remain silent as the group reflects together.

25 minutes | 4 to 20 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Reflect on a personal transition, project completion, or team milestone using concrete crafted symbols in a shared circle.

Use it when: Use at the end of an intensive workshop, project retrospective, or team retreat when participants need a quiet, focused structure to mark an ending or commitment.

Skip it when: Skip when the venue forbids open flames without battery substitutes, when time is under twenty minutes, or when the group has unresolved acute interpersonal conflict requiring structured mediation rather than open reflection.

Group arrangement: Individual crafting followed by a single whole-room seated circle

Timing: Playmeo source suggests 5 to 10 minutes for crafting followed by circle reflection; UWT sets total run time to 25 minutes to allow crafting, lighting, and unhurried sharing for up to 20 people.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Place paper bags and craft markers on shared tables.
  2. Set out the bag of sand and scoop on a central supply table.
  3. Arrange chairs or floor cushions in an open circle with enough space in the middle for lanterns.
  4. Verify room fire policy; substitute battery-powered LED tea lights if flame candles are prohibited.

Say this to open

We are marking this transition together by making simple paper lanterns. Take one paper bag. You will have seven minutes to write or draw symbols on your bag reflecting our prompt: what is one thing you are letting go of, or one goal you are carrying forward? Decorate it however you like. When we gather in the circle, you will have the choice to speak about what you drew, or simply set it down in silence.

How to run it

  1. Introduce theme and craft lanterns 8 minutes

Distribute paper bags and pens. State the reflection prompt clearly. For example, a participant might draw an open hand with the word 'micromanagement' to symbolize letting go of control, or sketch an arrow toward a calendar date. Give participants seven minutes of quiet crafting time. Warn them when two minutes remain.

  2. Form circle and prepare lanterns 5 minutes

Ask everyone to bring their bag and sit in the circle. Pass around the sand scoop. Each person adds two tablespoons of sand to the bottom of their bag for ballast. Hand out votive candles or LED tea lights. Place candles firmly into the sand inside each bag. If using matches or a lighter, light candles sequentially around the circle first, then dim the room lights. If using LED tea lights, turn them on, set them in the bags, and dim the room lights.

  3. Share reflections around the circle 9 minutes

Open the circle for sharing. Move sequentially or open the floor for voluntary contributions. Each person who speaks gets up to 45 seconds to describe their lantern. Emphasize that anyone may pass by placing their bag in front of them without speaking. Cap sharing at nine minutes; if larger groups approach the limit, remind speakers to keep comments to one sentence.

  4. Observe silence and close 3 minutes

Hold one minute of shared silent contemplation observing the lighted lanterns. Facilitate brief whole-room debrief questions. Conclude the exercise, extinguish real candles carefully, and invite participants to take their lanterns home.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A ring of illuminated personal lanterns representing participants' reflections, which individuals may take with them or keep private.

Remote

For remote sessions, notify participants in advance using the supply checklist. Participants spend 7 minutes crafting on mute with cameras on or off. In plenary, participants dim their room lights, turn on their camera, hold their illuminated bag up to the camera lens, and share verbally for 30 seconds or pass by posting an asterisk in the chat.

Hybrid

In-person participants form a semicircle facing the room screen and room camera. Remote participants illuminate their crafted bags on webcam. The facilitator alternates speakers between one in-room member and one remote member. A dedicated room laptop shows the remote video gallery placed on a central stool in the lantern ring.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Paper bags tip over easily on an uneven floor or carpet.
Ensure every participant adds at least two full scoops of sand to weight the base before placing the candle.
Participants speak for too long during the circle, running out the clock.
Set a clear 45-second guideline before sharing begins. Offer a gentle chime or prompt when time is up, and remind the room that brief phrases are welcome.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, where it is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained the core mechanic from Mark Collard's Playmeo design: decorating paper bags with personal symbols, weighting with sand, adding candles, and holding a circle reflection. UWT structured the timing into explicit 8-5-9-3 minute blocks, added explicit pass choices, safety rules for LED alternatives, and concrete hybrid/remote adaptations.
