United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

JourneyFolio

Participants map their career and life milestones onto a four-layer timeline grid, then draft brief story cards or linked slides for key moments. In pairs, they share one self-selected story to practice narrating their path beyond standard resume bullets.

45 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Produce a multidimensional personal timeline that connects work experience with learning, side projects, and personal highlights.

Use it when: Use during career transitions, cohort onboarding, or portfolio workshops when people need to articulate a well-rounded professional narrative.

Skip it when: Skip when the immediate goal is producing an ATS-compliant text resume or when participants prefer strictly private personal boundaries.

Group arrangement: Individual drafting followed by work in pairs

Timing: UWT 45-minute workshop session adapted from the multi-hour or multi-week asynchronous framework in Gamestorming.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Print the JourneyFolio Grid worksheet for in-person attendees or distribute the pre-built presentation template link.
  2. Ensure each person has access to colored writing tools or digital shape styling.

Say this to open

Resumes often flatten our experiences into a list of job titles and dates. Today we will build a JourneyFolio grid across four swim lanes: Professional Path, Education and Learning, Side Projects, and Personal Highlights. You will map key moments across time, pick one or two pivotal moments to flesh out into a story, and practice sharing your path with a partner. You decide how much personal detail to include.

How to run it

  1. Introduce the grid layers 5 minutes

Show the four timeline swim lanes: Professional Path (jobs, roles, direct duties), Education and Learning (formal study, certifications, self-taught skills), Side Projects (community work, hobbies, volunteering), and Personal Highlights (values, life challenges, personal traits in action). Provide one clear example: under Side Projects, running an amateur running club; under Professional Path, junior analyst role. Give participants 1 minute to ask clarifying questions.

  2. Map milestones onto the timeline 12 minutes

Participants work individually. Instruct everyone to plot 6 to 10 milestone markers across their timeline using years or life phases along the horizontal axis. Direct them to place colored dots, shapes, or sticky notes into the corresponding swim lanes. People may work on paper worksheets or directly in digital slide templates.

  3. Flesh out detailed story anchors 13 minutes

Ask participants to choose 2 specific milestone markers from their grid. For each selected marker, they complete a story card or build a detail slide covering the five worksheet prompts: Milestone Title and Year, Swim Lane, what happened, their role or actions, and what this demonstrates about them. If using digital slides, prompt them to hyperlink the marker on the home grid to the detail slide and create a return link.

  4. Pair storytelling exchange 10 minutes

Organize participants into pairs. If there is an odd number, form one group of three. For the first 5 minutes, Person A presents their grid for up to 4 minutes, and Person B asks one question: What does this experience tell me about how you work or solve problems? At the 5-minute call, reverse roles for 5 minutes so Person B shares and Person A asks the question.

  5. Whole-room debrief 5 minutes

Convene the whole group. Invite 2 or 3 volunteers to share what changed when they placed their side projects or personal moments next to their formal jobs. Keep sharing strictly volunteer-based.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A completed four-lane timeline grid with at least two developed milestone story cards or linked slides.

Remote

Use a shared slide deck where each participant gets their own slide section containing a pre-formatted timeline grid slide and detail story slides. Run individual mapping with muted microphones, then send participants into 2-person breakout rooms for the 10-minute pair exchange.

Hybrid

Ensure all participants use digital presentation software so in-person and remote participants can view each other's visual grids equally during pair sharing. Pair remote attendees together and in-person attendees together whenever possible to avoid audio feedback. If mixed pairs are unavoidable, have the in-person partner use headphones and move to a quiet corner to speak clearly.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

A participant feels their personal life or side projects are private and does not want to write them down.
Remind them that all four lanes are optional prompts. They can focus entirely on professional training, side coding projects, or formal education milestones.
Participants get bogged down trying to format presentation slides or hyperlinking during the session.
Instruct them to focus on writing the text of the two story cards first. Hyperlinks and visual formatting can be added after the core content is written.
