United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Icebreaker Bingo

Participants circulate with a grid of personal traits or experiences, interviewing each other to find people who match squares and marking off rows.

15 minutes | 6 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Exchange background facts across a group to establish basic rapport before working together.

Use it when: Use at the start of a multi-person meeting, workshop, or team launch where people do not know each other well.

Skip it when: Skip when the group already works together daily, or when participants need to begin immediate focused technical work.

Group arrangement: Mingle format in pairs. If there is an odd number of participants, one group forms a trio or the facilitator joins as a participant.

Timing: UWT suggested 15-minute run time based on traditional mingles and the 5-to-15 minute band in stored records.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Print one copy of the bingo grid worksheet for each participant, or set up a digital sheet containing the grid text for remote use.
  2. Ensure open floor space allows participants to walk and speak in pairs without crowding.

Say this to open

Take a card and a pen. Your task is to mingle and find someone who matches a prompt on your card. For example, if you ask someone whether they play chess and they say yes, write their name in that box. Each person can only sign your card twice. You have eight minutes to complete any horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line of four boxes, or aim for a full card.

How to run it

  1. Introduce rules and distribute cards 2 minutes

Hand out the printed grid cards and pens. Read the opening script aloud. Point out that anyone may pass on answering a specific prompt or skip a box without giving a reason. Form initial pairs, allowing one trio if the participant count is odd.

  2. Mingle and sign grids 8 minutes

Participants walk around the room, interviewing partners one on one or in one trio. When a partner confirms a prompt, they write their name in that box. A participant may sign another person's card at most two times. Prompt participants to swap partners roughly every minute, and call out the halfway time check at four minutes.

  3. Review completed lines 2 minutes

Stop the mingle and ask participants to return to their seats. Ask for a show of hands from anyone who completed a line of four or filled the most squares. Invite two people to share one surprising item they discovered about a peer.

  4. Conduct brief debrief 3 minutes

Facilitate a brief group debrief. Ask one or two debrief questions and take two or three responses from volunteers before moving to the next agenda item.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Signed bingo grid cards documenting peer matches, retained by individual participants.

Remote

Distribute the 4x4 grid text in a shared document where each attendee has an assigned tab or slide. Send participants into randomized breakout rooms of two (or one trio if odd) for two minutes each across three rapid rounds. Between rounds, participants mark matches on their digital card.

Hybrid

Pair remote attendees with each other in virtual breakout rooms using individual digital grids while in-person participants mingle on the physical floor. Combine line counts and discoveries during the whole-group debrief via speakerphone or room video.

Access and participation choices

Observed on EasyRetro.io and TeamBuilding.com as digital and printable human bingo icebreakers. The human bingo mingle format is a widely adapted workshop convention.

Retained the traditional mingle mechanic and prompt items found in the EasyRetro and TeamBuilding.com records. Formatted the items into a runnable 4x4 grid with clear signature limits, set timing allocations, added explicit trio rules for odd participant counts, and added access options.
