Horoscopes and Trait Prompts

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Compare descriptive adjectives against personal observations and practice explaining agreement or disagreement in small groups.

Use it when: Use during language learning, communication workshops, or low-stakes team check-ins to practice descriptive vocabulary and conversational turn-taking.

Skip it when: Skip if participants find astrological themes culturally uncomfortable, or when the group needs to work on concrete project decisions.

Group arrangement: Trios or quartets; whole-room debrief with 3 to 4 spoken contributions.

Timing: Source indicates 15 to 30 minutes; structured here for a 20-minute session.

Materials and tools

• One printed Zodiac Sign Reference Sheet per small group (or displayed digitally)
• Scratch paper and pens for optional note-taking

Before participants arrive

1. Print or project the Zodiac Sign Reference Sheet.
2. Arrange seating into clusters of 3 to 4 chairs.

Say this to open

Today we are looking at traditional horoscope descriptions as a vocabulary and discussion exercise. You will read the listed traits for your sign, or any sign you choose to review, and decide whether you agree with the description. You do not need to share your actual birthday or believe in astrology to participate.

How to run it

1. Introduce the prompt and vocabulary 3 minutes

   Distribute the reference sheet. Read the opening script. Review two sample trait words with the room (for example, analytical versus impulsive) to clarify meanings. Explain that participants may focus on their own sign, someone else's sign, or analyze the descriptions as a neutral writing exercise.

2. Individual review 3 minutes

   Participants work quietly. Each person selects one or two signs to inspect. They pick two traits they think fit well and one trait they disagree with, jotting down brief reasons or an example.

3. Small group comparison 10 minutes

   In groups of 3 or 4, participants take turns sharing their selected traits. Each person gets about 2 minutes to explain which words they chose and why they agree or disagree. Group members may respond with alternative observations. If someone prefers not to speak about themselves, they may discuss how the traits describe a fictional character or general stereotype.

4. Whole-room debrief 4 minutes

   Bring the room together. Invite 3 to 4 volunteers to share observations on how accurate or vague the trait words felt across the room.

Debrief questions

• Which trait descriptions felt broad enough that they could apply to almost anyone?
• What vocabulary words were unfamiliar or had interesting connotations across your group?
• How easy or difficult was it to disagree with a description without criticizing the person reading it?

Finished output: Small group completion of trait comparisons, with optional written notes kept by participants.

Remote

Display the reference sheet on a shared screen or drop a PDF into the chat. Split attendees into breakout rooms of 3 or 4 for 10 minutes. Direct participants to use the in-app raise hand feature for the debrief.

Hybrid

Pair in-person participants with in-person peers and online participants with online breakout rooms to avoid audio feedback. Post the reference sheet in the shared video chat so both rooms access the identical text.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may review a fictional persona's sign or analyze the text as a neutral linguistic sample instead of sharing personal details.
• Anyone may participate by listening only or contributing solely via text chat in digital settings.

If the session gets stuck

A participant does not know their astrological sign or objects to sharing their birthday.

Remind the room that knowing your sign is not required. Invite them to pick any sign at random from the sheet to analyze.

One participant dominates the small group conversation.

Announce halfway through the small group time that groups should ensure each member has had equal speaking time.
