United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Frantic

Participants work together in an open space to keep balloons aloft as the facilitator continuously adds more balloons into play. The group tracks their survival time across rounds to refine their communication and floor coverage under pressure.

15 minutes | 6 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Observe and adapt whole-group physical coordination, verbal cues, and coverage under an increasing workload.

Use it when: Use when an in-person group needs an energetic movement challenge to examine communication breakdowns and adaptive team strategy.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have mobility limitations, latex allergies, sensory sensitivities to sudden shouting, or when the space has slippery floors and tight obstacles.

Group arrangement: Whole group moving freely in an open room.

Timing: UWT suggested standard duration based on Playmeo rules for two timed attempts and reflection.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear the room of chairs, tables, bags, and tripping hazards.
  2. Inflate 2 to 3 latex-free balloons per person before the session.
  3. Store extra inflated balloons in a large bag or bin near the facilitator station.

Say this to open

We are going to test our coordination under pressure. In this game, every balloon in the air is a Rabid Nugget. A balloon that touches the ground or is held is a Hectic. If a balloon hits the floor or stays held, I will call out a penalty: Berserk! If that grounded balloon is not back in the air within five seconds, I will call a second Berserk. Once we hit three Berserks, the round ends. Everyone starts with one balloon aloft, and I will toss an extra balloon into the room every ten seconds until our round ends.

How to run it

  1. Set up roles and rules 3 minutes

State the safety boundaries, game terms, and rules. Distribute one balloon to each participant. Invite anyone who prefers not to run or jump to manage the stopwatch or track penalties on the flipchart.

  2. Run round one 4 minutes

Start the timer. Everyone taps their initial balloon into the air at the same moment. Toss one new balloon into the group every 10 seconds until the round finishes. When a balloon touches the floor or is held stationary, point and call out 'Berserk 1!' If it stays grounded after 5 seconds, call 'Berserk 2!' When 3 Berserks occur, call 'Stop!' Record the elapsed time as Round 1.

  3. Plan strategy and run round two 5 minutes

Give the group 60 seconds to discuss coverage zones and verbal signals. Gather all balloons. Redistribute one balloon to each participant to restart, keeping the remaining balloons in the bin. Reset the timer and run Round 2 with the same rule: inject one balloon every 10 seconds until 3 Berserks end the round. Write down Round 2 elapsed time.

  4. Debrief 3 minutes

Gather everyone into a circle. Ask two volunteers to answer the first debrief question regarding communication. Then ask two different volunteers to answer the third debrief question regarding strategy shifts between rounds.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Two recorded survival times demonstrating group coordination under increasing load.

Remote

This physical activity cannot be run online without changing its mechanic entirely. For a remote team coordination challenge, run an alternative verbal count exercise: the group must count collaboratively from 1 to 20 with cameras on. Anyone may say the next number, but if two people speak at the same time, the count restarts at 1.

Hybrid

Do not run this game in a hybrid format. The speed and spatial awareness require all participants to share the physical room. If hybrid delivery is mandatory, run a separate online coordination activity for all participants instead.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants collide while lunging for the same descending balloon.
Pause play immediately. Remind players to call 'Mine!' early and assign loose positional zones across the floor.
Balloons drift into corners or against walls where people cannot reach them safely.
Establish a room boundary. Rule that any balloon drifting past the clear perimeter line is safely retrieved by the facilitator and returned to play without a penalty.

Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained the balloon mechanics, ratios, 10-second introduction interval, and source terminology (Rabid Nugget, Hectic, Berserk, Frenzy) from the Playmeo entry by Mark Collard. Clarified the conflict between defining a Frenzy as 6 penalties versus stopping at 3 penalties by adopting the 3-penalty stop condition for cleaner pacing. Removed unsupported hybrid spotter mechanics and provided explicit balloon replenishment parameters. Added structured step timings and safety parameters. Clarified that remote settings require a distinct verbal alternative.
