Helicopter

A center turner rotates a jump rope along the floor while participants step in and jump over it when their called clothing color is named.

10 minutes | 4 to 20 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Practice rhythm, jump timing, and active listening in a shared physical space.

Use it when: Use during an active movement break or warm-up when you have an open floor and high energy.

Skip it when: Skip if the room lacks open floor space, has slick flooring, or when jumping presents safety concerns for participants.

Group arrangement: Whole group standing in a circle around one central rope turner

Timing: Playworks suggests 10 minutes or more; 10 minutes matches typical group attention and physical stamina.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear an open area of at least 20 to 25 feet in diameter.
  2. Mark an outer circle using chalk, painter tape, or flat spot markers so each participant has a clearly designated space on the perimeter.
  3. Ensure the floor surface is flat, dry, and free of tripping hazards.

Say this to open

Welcome everyone. We are going to play Helicopter. Everyone stand on an outer spot around the circle. I will stand in the middle with this long rope. While the rope spins slowly overhead, I will say a chant and call out a color. If you are wearing that color anywhere on your clothes, take one step forward. When the rope sweeps low along the ground, time your jump to let it pass under your feet. If the rope touches your feet, freeze and step back to your perimeter spot for the next round. You can also participate by helping me call colors or acting as an outside spotter.

How to run it

  1. Position and demonstrate 2 minutes

Direct participants to stand on marked spots around the perimeter. Walk to the center with the rope. Demonstrate turning the rope slowly overhead, reciting the chant, lowering the rope to skim the floor, and having a volunteer take one step forward to jump over it. Confirm everyone understands safe spacing.

  2. Practice round 2 minutes

Run a slow trial round. Say: 'Helicopter, helicopter over my head, I choose a color and the color is blue.' Lower the rope along the floor and sweep it smoothly in a circle. Participants wearing blue step forward and jump. If someone misses or stops the rope, reset without penalty to ensure everyone understands the timing.

  3. Full group gameplay 4 minutes

Run sequential rounds with different colors. Keep the rope low to the ground, no higher than ankle height. Each round lasts until the rope sweeps a full rotation or is stopped by a jumper's foot. Allow jumpers who successfully jump to stay in for another rotation or step back. Rotate the turner role to a willing volunteer if appropriate.

  4. Cool-down and debrief 2 minutes

Collect the rope. Ask participants to return to their baseline spots and take two deep breaths. Pose one or two reflection questions to the whole group, taking two or three brief responses.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Completion of multiple jumping rounds with group participation.

Remote

This physical rope game requires in-person shared space and cannot run remotely. For an online rhythm alternative, run Color Call Reaction: the host names a color, and anyone wearing that color performs a designated stationary action on camera (such as a clap-and-hop or seated arm raise) to a metronome beat.

Hybrid

Not recommended for hybrid settings due to the physical nature of the rope mechanic. If required, have in-person participants play on camera while remote participants participate in the stationary Color Call Reaction variant on screen.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

The rope lifts too high off the ground, creating a tripping hazard.
Keep your turning hand close to floor level and crouch or kneel in the center to maintain a flat, low sweep.
Participants bunch together toward the center, crowding the jumper.
Remind participants to hold their perimeter spots until their specific color is called, taking only one step forward.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playworks game library under the title 'Helicopter'.

Retained the core Playworks game mechanic: center turner, overhead helicopter chant, calling a color to step forward, sweeping the rope low along the ground, and stopping upon contact. Added standard UWT timing, step allocations, non-jumping access roles, and safety constraints.
