United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Inner World Art
Participants complete a brief body scan mindfulness exercise, reflect on internal physical sensations or thoughts, and draw or collage an abstract visual map of their internal state.
30 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Translate internal physical sensations and mental states into visual representations without pressure for realistic drawing.
Use it when: Use during a wellbeing workshop, retreat, or personal reflection session where participants need quiet time to unwind and reflect.
Skip it when: Skip when the agenda requires quick physical interaction, analytical task planning, or when participants lack comfortable workspace and drawing materials.
Group arrangement: Individual seated reflection and creation, followed by optional voluntary partner or plenary sharing.
Timing: Playmeo recommends up to 30 minutes for artwork alone; UWT formats a complete 30-minute session with guided scan, art making, and debrief.
Materials and tools
- One sheet of heavyweight blank drawing paper (letter or A4) per participant
- Assorted colored markers, colored pencils, or pastels (at least one set per 4 participants)
- Optional collage materials such as scrap paper, glue sticks, and scissors
- One chime or bell for the facilitator
- Printed Body Scan facilitation script for the facilitator
Before participants arrive
- Arrange chairs with desk space or supply clipboards and floor cushions so each person has a firm surface to draw on.
- Set drawing supplies within easy reach of each seat.
- Ensure the room is quiet and distractions are minimized.
Say this to open
Find a comfortable position where you can sit steadily with feet resting on the floor. We are going to spend five minutes in a quiet body scan to notice physical sensations and thoughts. After that, you will have blank paper and drawing supplies to map whatever you noticed using colors, shapes, lines, or words. There is no right way to draw your inner state, and sharing your art at the end is completely optional.
How to run it
Settle and begin body scan 6 minutes
Invite participants to close their eyes or lower their gaze toward the floor. Read the provided Body Scan script in a calm, steady cadence. Guide attention from the feet up through legs, torso, shoulders, hands, neck, and head, prompting participants to observe tension, ease, warmth, or coolness without judging or fixing anything.
Transition to creative mapping 2 minutes
Ring the chime gently to conclude the scan. Ask participants to bring their attention back to the room. Pose the prompt: 'What does your inner landscape look like right now? What colors, shapes, or textures match what you noticed?' State that they can use abstract scribbles, symbols, or single words.
Individual art making 15 minutes
Allow participants to work silently on their paper using the provided markers, pencils, or collage materials. Offer one neutral example for anyone stuck: drawing a dark jagged knot where the shoulders felt tight, surrounded by soft blue circles where the breathing felt steady. Ring the chime when two minutes remain.
Optional sharing and debrief 7 minutes
Invite participants to place their paper face down if private, or hold it up to a partner if they wish to share. In the whole room, invite up to three volunteers to describe one element of their artwork. Ask the prepared debrief questions to close the session.
Debrief questions
- What was it like translating a physical sensation or thought into a color or shape?
- Did your visual image shift or change as you drew it on paper?
- How might checking in with your internal state in this way help you manage busy workdays?
Finished output: An individual visual representation of personal sensations and reflections, which participants can keep private or share.
Remote
Run via video meeting. Participants supply their own blank paper and coloring tools at home. Facilitator reads the script over clear audio with optional soft chime. During the 15-minute creation step, participants can mute audio and turn off cameras if preferred. For sharing, volunteers can hold artwork up to the camera or type a one-sentence description in chat.
Hybrid
In-person participants receive physical drawing materials; remote participants gather their own paper and markers in advance. During the meditation and art phase, mute room audio to avoid room shuffle noise. During the debrief, alternate between one in-room volunteer holding up their sheet to the camera and one remote participant speaking.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may keep eyes open with a soft downward gaze if closing eyes is uncomfortable.
- Anyone uncomfortable drawing may write lists of descriptive words, metaphors, or simply rest quietly.
- Displaying or explaining artwork is completely voluntary; keeping work face-down or private is fully respected.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant expresses anxiety about having no artistic drawing talent.
- Remind everyone that this is sensory mapping rather than fine art. Simple blocks of color, zig-zag lines, or written words count equally.
- A participant falls asleep during the guided body scan.
- Do not startle them; let the soft chime bring attention back naturally at the end of the scan.
Terms used here
- Body Scan: A mindfulness technique where attention is systematically directed to different parts of the physical body to observe physical sensations without judgment.

The core mechanic of combining a body scan meditation with subsequent art creation is preserved from Lisa Laura's activity on Playmeo. UWT supplied a concrete 30-minute run time, exact step-by-step allocations, an opening script, a fully written Body Scan facilitator script, neutral modeling examples, and specific hybrid/remote parameters.
