Walk Tag
Pairs play a walking-only tag game inside a bounded area. When tagged, the new chaser completes two full turns in place before walking after their partner.
8 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Provide a brief physical reset that practices spatial awareness, pacing, and non-contact movement in a shared space.
Use it when: Use during in-person sessions when a group needs physical movement after sitting, or as a warm-up for spatial coordination.
Skip it when: Skip when room space is cramped or cluttered, when ambulatory games create physical hazards, or during fully seated sessions.
Group arrangement: Simultaneous pairs sharing one open boundary area. If there is an odd number of participants, one person serves as the boundary referee and timekeeper, or rotates in with the facilitator.
Timing: UWT suggested 8-minute format based on standard active energizers; Playmeo lists under 5 minutes of core play.
Materials and tools
- 4 boundary markers or floor tape to outline a 5m x 5m playing zone
- 1 handheld stopwatch or countdown timer
Before participants arrive
- Clear furniture from the center of the room.
- Mark a flat, unobstructed playing area roughly 5 meters by 5 meters using floor tape or boundary markers.
Say this to open
Find a partner and step inside our taped boundary. If we have an odd person, you can team up with me or serve as our round referee. One of you starts as the tagger, and the other is the evader. Keep both forearms raised horizontally across your chest with palms facing outward like car bumpers. You may only walk, keeping at least one foot grounded at all times. No running or sliding. When I call go, all taggers turn around twice on the spot, a full 720 degrees, and then walk to tag their partner with a gentle touch on the shoulder. Once tagged, switch roles: the new tagger immediately turns around twice on the spot before pursuing.
How to run it
Form pairs and brief safety 2 minutes
Organize participants into pairs inside the 5m x 5m marked square. If there is an odd number, assign one person as the boundary referee and timekeeper. Deliver the opening script. Demonstrate the Bumpers Up stance. Remind everyone that accidental contact with anyone other than their partner must be avoided entirely.
Round one play 2 minutes
Designate one person in each pair as Tagger 1. Start the timer. Call 'Go.' All taggers spin 720 degrees (two full rotations) in place. Taggers then walk to tag their partner using a gentle touch on the shoulder. When tagged, partners switch roles: the new tagger immediately performs two full rotations on the spot before chasing. Stop play after two minutes.
Round two switch 2 minutes
Have all initial evaders freeze in place while all initial taggers walk to find the nearest evader from a different pair. If an odd person served as referee, they swap roles with any willing participant now. Designate the partner who was being chased at the end of round one as the new starting tagger. Start the timer and play another two-minute round with the same walking and two-spin delay rules.
Cool down and debrief 2 minutes
Step outside the marked boundary. Gather the group standing or seated. Ask two short reflection questions about movement pacing and spatial awareness. Take 2 or 3 quick volunteer responses.
Debrief questions
- How did having all pairs share one small grid change how you navigated the room?
- What strategy helped you stay aware of other pairs while keeping eyes on your partner?
Finished output: Completion of two active walking rounds inside the boundary area with no physical running.
Remote
This activity requires physical movement and a shared boundary. It cannot be run online. For a remote energizer with shared focus, run a seated physical sequence like 'Simon Says' or a scavenger hunt instead.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not recommended. In-person participants play the physical game while remote participants take an off-camera movement break, as the spatial mechanic cannot cross screens.
Access and participation choices
- Participants who prefer not to spin due to dizziness or balance concerns can pause in place for a 4-second count instead of rotating.
- Anyone wishing not to walk or be tagged can serve as the referee or timekeeper without needing to disclose a reason.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants speed up into a jog or power walk.
- Pause the clock, re-demonstrate heel-to-toe walking, and enforce that one foot must remain grounded at all times.
- Pairs bump into other pairs in the 5m x 5m area.
- Remind everyone to keep bumpers up and widen the marked boundary by two paces if the group size is near group_max.
Terms used here
- Bumpers Up: A defensive posture where forearms are held up across the chest with palms outward to cushion accidental contact.

Observed in Playmeo documentation; credited on Playmeo to Mark Collard.
Retained core Playmeo mechanics: 5m x 5m playing area, walking-only rule, Bumpers Up position, partner tagging, and 720-degree spin delay on initial tag and tag turnover. Added structured odd-number roles, clear partner-swapping protocol, explicit non-spinning accessibility options, and structured timing.
