United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Black Magic

A partner steps outside while the room picks a visible object. When they return, the facilitator points at items until a black object signals that the next item is the chosen target.

15 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Demonstrate how shared assumptions and hidden rules shape pattern recognition.

Use it when: Use during a quick break or before a session on problem-solving, assumptions, and observational habits.

Skip it when: Skip when the group finds parlor tricks, hidden codes, or accomplice dynamics patronizing.

Group arrangement: Whole room watching one facilitator and one secret partner.

Timing: Matches the 10 to 15 minute window in Playmeo records.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Brief one participant before the session starts. Teach them the rule: you will point at random objects, then point at any black item. The object named right after the black item is the group's pick.

Say this to open

We are going to test our deduction skills. One person will step out of the room. While they are gone, everyone else will choose one visible object here. When our volunteer returns, I will point to items one by one. They will answer yes or no. Your job is to uncover the pattern we use.

How to run it

  1. Frame the game and send partner out 2 minutes

Say the opening script. Invite your briefed partner to leave the room. Make sure the door closes so they cannot hear.

  2. Select the target object 2 minutes

Ask the room to agree on one visible item in the space, such as a blue notebook or a wall clock. Confirm everyone knows the chosen target.

  3. Run observation rounds 7 minutes

Call the partner back. Point to an ordinary non-black item and ask if it is the target. The partner answers no. Point to another non-black item. Next, point to a black item. Immediately point to the chosen target. The partner answers yes. Repeat for two more rounds with new targets. Ask players to whisper guesses to you rather than shouting them.

  4. Reveal the code and debrief 4 minutes

Ask a participant who guessed the pattern to state the rule, or take the partner's place for one quick test. Reveal the rule if no one caught it. Ask two debrief questions and take two to three responses.

Debrief questions

Finished output: The group discovers and states the signaling code.

Remote

Put the secret partner in a digital waiting room. Have the remaining group pick an item visible on someone's webcam or screen. Bring the partner back. The facilitator calls out items one by one, naming a black item right before the selected target.

Hybrid

Keep the secret partner in person or on video. Ensure the target item sits within view of the room camera or is held up on screen so everyone shares visual access.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

A player blurts out the answer during the first round.
Confirm they solved it, congratulate them, and ask them to act as the pointer using a new cue like wooden objects.
The accomplice says yes on the black item itself by mistake.
Treat it as a wrong guess, point to the real target next, and proceed.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Playmeo catalog, credited to Mark Collard. The activity is a traditional deduction game widely known as Black Magic.

Preserved the traditional party game mechanic recorded by Mark Collard on Playmeo. Added explicit round timing, whispered guess guidelines to prevent early spoilers, and reflection prompts on implicit workplace assumptions.
