Balloon Tag
Participants tie an inflated balloon to one ankle and move through an open boundary area trying to pop opponents' balloons with their feet while shielding their own. Play continues until one balloon remains intact or time runs out.
10 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Increase physical activity and practice spatial awareness through a lively elimination game.
Use it when: Use during in-person sessions when the group needs physical movement, has clear unobstructed floor space, and wears closed-toe footwear.
Skip it when: Skip when participants have mobility limitations, latex sensitivities, or footwear unsuitable for stepping, or when sudden loud popping sounds create distress.
Group arrangement: Individual free-for-all in an open boundary area
Timing: UWT suggested duration of 10 minutes, including inflation, rules briefing, active play, and quick cleanup debrief.
Materials and tools
- One latex-free or standard balloon per person, plus spares
- One 40 to 60 cm strip of string or yarn per person
- Handheld balloon pumps (at least two for access needs)
- Scissors (for prep)
- Floor tape or cones (to mark perimeter boundaries)
- One trash bin for immediate cleanup
Before participants arrive
- Pre-cut string pieces to 40 to 60 cm lengths, one per participant.
- Clear tables, chairs, and all trip hazards from the center floor.
- Mark a clear perimeter boundary using tape or cones.
- Place balloon pumps and spare balloons near the entrance.
Say this to open
We are playing Balloon Tag. Everyone gets one balloon and one string. Inflate your balloon, knot it, and tie it around one ankle so it trails slightly behind you. When I say Go, try to pop other balloons by stepping on them while protecting your own. If your balloon bursts or detaches, step outside the boundary line.
How to run it
Inflate and tie 3 minutes
Distribute one balloon and one string to each person. Offer handheld balloon pumps to anyone who prefers not to blow up a balloon by mouth. Each runner inflates a balloon to roughly 25 to 30 cm, ties the neck, and secures the string to one ankle with 20 to 30 cm of slack trailing. People opting out of running can take active support roles such as boundary referee, timekeeper, or balloon dispenser.
Establish safety rules 1 minutes
Deliver safety instructions: pop balloons only by stepping downward onto trailing targets. No kicking ankles, pushing, tripping, or physical contact with other bodies. Hands must stay to oneself. When a balloon pops or slips off, that runner immediately steps outside the boundary.
Play the round 4 minutes
Signal the start. Active players maneuver inside the perimeter to step on trailing balloons while shielding their own. Referees help spot bursts and enforce boundary lines. Stop play when one intact balloon remains, or call time at four minutes if multiple runners persist.
Clean up and debrief 2 minutes
Have all in-person participants, including runners and non-running support roles, collect floor debris and drop fragments into the trash bin. Gather the group at the boundary line. Hear two or three responses to the debrief questions, inviting both active runners and referees to share their observations.
Debrief questions
- What movement or positioning helped you protect your trailing balloon?
- Referees and observers, what patterns did you notice as the playing area cleared out?
Finished output: Completion of an elimination tag round, collection of all balloon debris, and group reflection.
Remote
This active physical tag game cannot run online in its named format. For a remote energizer with an outward focus, play an alternative visual scavenger hunt: set a 60-second timer and invite people to retrieve one small round object from their room to hold up on screen.
Hybrid
Balloon Tag requires physical co-presence to play directly. Remote participants can act as external timekeepers, spot boundary violations via a fixed wide-angle camera, and share their observations via audio during the debrief.
Access and participation choices
- Provide handheld balloon pumps for participants who cannot or prefer not to blow up balloons by mouth.
- Offer non-running roles including boundary referee, timekeeper, balloon dispenser, or audio commentator.
- Participants may step out of the game at any moment without penalty or explanation.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants kick at ankles rather than stepping down onto trailing balloons.
- Pause the round immediately. Remind players that the target is the trailing rubber on the floor, not legs. Require controlled downward stepping instead of forward kicking.
- A string slips off an ankle without the balloon popping.
- Enforce a consistent rule announced before the start: any balloon detached from an ankle is considered out of play.
Sources and adaptation
Observed on Playmeo, which attributes the write-up to Mark Collard. The core game is a traditional recreational elimination tag activity.
Retained the traditional balloon-on-ankle stomping mechanics from Playmeo. UWT added explicit safety rules, time allocation, boundary enforcement, cleanup requirements, handheld pump materials, and non-running role options.
