Four Square Switch

Players run a standard four square court with a movement twist: before hitting a bounced ball, a player can call out another square number to swap positions immediately with that player. The newly swapped player must rush in to return the ball before a second bounce.

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Practice quick verbal cueing, rapid physical repositioning, and clear communication under dynamic motion.

Use it when: Use during active physical breaks, team warmups, or playground-style energizers where participants want moderate movement.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have limited mobility, slippery or crowded floors, or when an indoor quiet session is required.

Group arrangement: 4 active court players with remaining participants in a single waiting line.

Timing: UWT suggested duration based on a 15-minute Playworks physical game block.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Mark a 4-square grid on a flat, smooth surface. Label the squares 1, 2, 3, and 4 (or A, B, C, D) clockwise.
  2. Designate a waiting line marker near square 1 for participants who are not currently on the court.

Say this to open

We are playing Four Square Switch. Four players take the court, and everyone else queues in line. Square 4 serves underhand into any other square. The twist is the switch: after the ball bounces in your square, but before you hit it, you can yell out another square number. You and that player immediately sprint to switch places, and that player must keep the ball alive. Let us walk through one slow practice round first.

How to run it

  1. Introduce rules and walk through a switch 3 minutes

Explain the base rules: underhand hits only, one bounce per square, out-of-bounds hits or double bounces send a player to the back of the queue. Demonstrate the switch mechanic without a ball: player in square 2 calls 'Switch 4!', both players swap squares, and player 4 hits the ball. Run one slow-motion demonstration rally with four volunteers.

  2. Begin open game play 5 minutes

Player 4 serves by bouncing the ball once in their square and hitting it underhand into another square. Players rally standard four square. Any player receiving a ball may shout another square number before striking the ball. Both players swap instantly, and the new occupant plays the ball. If an error occurs, the player who committed the error heads to the queue, and the front person in line enters at square 1 while others advance.

  3. Add switch limits and rotate line 5 minutes

Introduce a switch rule variation to manage court chaos: maximum one switch per rally, or maximum two switches per player. Ensure waiting players rotate into square 1 promptly so everyone gets court time. Those preferring not to play can act as line judges or ball retrievers.

  4. Cool down and debrief 2 minutes

Call time, collect the ball, and bring everyone into a standing circle for a quick reflection. Take two quick participant observations.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Completion of multiple active rotation rounds with all participants rotating through court and line roles.

Remote

This physical game cannot run online without changing its core mechanic. For a remote team, run a verbal reaction game such as 'Number Switch': 4 pinned participants speak in turn around a topic, and any speaker can shout another pinned person's name to pass the speaking turn instantly before finishing their sentence.

Hybrid

Hybrid play is not recommended. Remote participants cannot participate in physical ball court play. Run purely in person, or offer an off-camera observational role like scorekeeper or timekeeper if remote viewers are present.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Players collide when rushing to switch squares.
Establish a clear passing rule: players must pass each other on their right side, or enlarge the center court boundary lines to create running room.
One player dominates square 4 and rarely calls switches.
Introduce a house rule: a switch must be called at least once every three volleys, or mandate that square 4 must switch when returning a ball.
