Choose this exercise

Purpose: Examine a shared theme or social issue through collective viewing and structured discussion without requiring technical film analysis.

Use it when: Use when an intact group needs a common narrative reference point to discuss sensitive, complex, or community-wide challenges.

Skip it when: Skip when immediate operational decisions are due, when technical screening equipment is unreliable, or when participants lack time for both viewing and debriefing.

Group arrangement: Whole-room viewing followed by pairs or small groups of 3 to 4, closing with whole-group sharing.

Timing: Based on the 90 to 120 minute range in Participatory Methods evidence; structured here for a 45-minute screening plus 45 minutes of reflection and discussion.

Materials and tools

• Screen and projector or large monitor
• Audio playback system checked for clear dialogue
• Selected film file or licensed streaming access (up to 45 minutes runtime)
• One blank note sheet per person
• One pen or pencil per person
• Printed discussion question sheets (one per small group)

Before participants arrive

1. Test video playback, aspect ratio, subtitles, and room sound levels before participants arrive.
2. Arrange seating in an unobstructed semi-circle facing the screen, ensuring comfortable sightlines.
3. Place note paper and pens at each seat.
4. Ensure room lighting can be dimmed for viewing and raised quickly for discussion.

Say this to open

Welcome to our Film Society session. Today we will watch a selected piece together, followed by structured reflection. As you watch, pay attention to specific scenes, characters, or dilemmas that catch your attention. You will have a few quiet minutes immediately afterward to note down your thoughts before we talk.

How to run it

1. Introduce context 5 minutes

   State why this film was chosen and outline the session structure. Explain that viewing will be followed by silent note-taking, small-group dialogue, and a closing checkout round. Announce whether content warnings apply.

2. Group screening 45 minutes

   Dim the lights and play the selected film or short clip uninterrupted. Ensure closed captions are visible. Facilitator monitors sound and picture quality throughout.

3. Individual reflection 5 minutes

   Raise the room lights. Invite participants to write silently on their note sheet: one scene that stood out, one question it raised, and any immediate emotional or analytical reaction. Emphasize that notes remain private unless shared voluntarily.

4. Subgroup dialogue 20 minutes

   Divide participants into small groups of 3 to 4. Distribute the discussion questions. Each group selects two questions to explore, ensuring everyone who wishes to speak has uninterrupted time.

5. Closing takeaways 15 minutes

   Reconvene the full circle. Invite each person in turn to share one brief takeaway, insight, or lingering question sparked by the film and discussion. Participants may pass without explanation.

Debrief questions

• Which character dilemma or scene felt closest to the challenges we face in our own context?
• What assumptions did the film confirm or challenge for you?
• What is one practical question this film leaves with our group?

Finished output: A shared set of spoken or recorded thematic takeaways and critical questions connecting the film to the group's ongoing work.

Remote

Run via video meeting platform. Distribute a synchronized watch link using a platform like Watch2Gether, or stream with optimized sound settings. Maintain chat for real-time reactions during viewing. Break into breakout rooms of 3 to 4 for step 4, then reconvene in the main room for step 5.

Hybrid

In-person attendees view the shared room screen while remote attendees view via the streaming link or mirrored video feed. For discussion, pair in-person participants together and assign remote participants to online breakout rooms, using a shared digital notepad for takeaways.

Access and participation choices

• Provide open or closed captions in the primary working language.
• Allow participants to take notes or simply watch quietly without writing.
• Explicit pass option on all verbal sharing during subgroups and final takeaways.

If the session gets stuck

One or two participants dominate the subgroup discussion with personal film critiques.

Remind subgroups to focus on the prompt questions and use timed rounds of two minutes per speaker.

Audio or video streaming stutters during remote viewing.

Pause the group session, send the direct link with a precise timestamp, and instruct everyone to watch locally for the remaining minutes before rejoining.
