United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Spot the Difference
Pairs observe each other, turn back-to-back to change small details of their appearance, and then guess what changed across two rounds.
10 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice focused visual observation and recall with a partner in a brief interactive drill.
Use it when: Use as a light energizer or warm-up before sessions on observation, communication, or noticing subtle behavioral cues.
Skip it when: Skip when participants are uncomfortable with body scrutiny, or when personal, cultural, or religious dress constraints make altering appearance awkward.
Group arrangement: Pairs (or a trio of three if the room has an odd number)
Timing: UWT suggested duration based on a standard 5 to 15 minute warm-up band
Materials and tools
- No physical materials required
- One stopwatch or countdown timer for the facilitator
Before participants arrive
- Clear enough open floor space for pairs to stand facing each other and turn back-to-back comfortably.
Say this to open
Find a partner and stand facing each other. Look closely at how your partner looks right now. In a moment, you will turn back-to-back and alter three small things about your appearance, such as rolling up a sleeve or moving a watch. Your partner will then try to guess what changed.
How to run it
Pair and study initial appearance 2 minutes
Divide participants into pairs. If there is an odd number, create one trio where participants rotate turns. Have partners stand facing each other and take 30 seconds to observe their partner's current appearance. Deliver the opening script.
Execute round one changes 3 minutes
Ask partners to turn back-to-back. Start a 30-second timer. Each person changes three distinct things about their appearance (for example, rolling up a sleeve, untying a shoelace, or taking off a ring). When time expires, call 'Face your partner'. Partners take turns guessing the three changes made by the other person. Give pairs 2 minutes to complete their guesses.
Execute round two changes 3 minutes
Instruct pairs to turn back-to-back again. This time, each person must change three new things without undoing the first three changes. Start the 30-second timer. When time is called, partners turn back around and attempt to identify the three new changes. Give pairs 2 minutes to complete their guesses.
Reflect and wrap up 2 minutes
Bring the full room back together. Ask one or two reflection questions to the whole group. Take 2 or 3 quick answers from volunteers.
Debrief questions
- What strategies helped you notice the changes most accurately?
- How did the challenge shift between round one and round two as options became scarcer?
Finished output: Completion of two rounds of partner observation and guessing.
Remote
Run in 1-on-1 breakout rooms or with the entire group on gallery view. When instructed, participants turn their webcams off for 30 seconds to make three visible changes, then turn cameras back on and take turns guessing in their breakout room or in chat.
Hybrid
Pair in-person participants with in-person partners and remote participants with remote partners in breakout rooms. If an uneven split forces a hybrid pair, the in-person partner uses a laptop camera positioned at eye level.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may alter desk items, background props, or handheld accessories instead of clothing or personal appearance.
- Any participant may choose to act as a neutral timekeeper or referee without making changes to themselves.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants struggle to find three things to change in the second round.
- Remind them that subtle changes count, such as unbuttoning a cuff, crossing ankles, moving hair behind an ear, or shifting an object to another hand.
- An odd number of participants leaves one person without a partner.
- Form one group of three where person A changes while B and C observe, then rotate so each person gets a turn, or invite the extra person to co-facilitate and manage the timer.
Sources and adaptation
Observed on Playmeo, attributed on page to Mark Collard.
Retained the core mechanic from Playmeo evidence: pairs observe, turn back-to-back, change three things in 30 seconds, face each other to guess, and repeat for a second round. UWT added exact timing allotments, a structured 4-step facilitation flow, debrief questions, access choices, and remote/hybrid protocols.
