United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Commitment
Players stand on marked spots in a circle while one person stands in the middle without a spot. Circle players silently signal and swap spots across the room while the middle player tries to claim an open spot before it is occupied.
10 minutes | 8 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice non-verbal coordination, split-second decision making, and spatial awareness during a physical warm-up.
Use it when: Use when an in-person group needs a physical reset or energizer between heavy cognitive tasks.
Skip it when: Skip when the meeting room lacks open floor space, when participants have limited mobility and prefer not to run, or in virtual settings.
Group arrangement: Whole group in a single circle with one participant in the center.
Timing: UWT suggested allocation based on Playmeo 5 to 15 minute energizer recommendation.
Materials and tools
- One floor marker per circle player minus one (e.g. poly spots, cones, chalk marks, or paper plates)
Before participants arrive
- Clear a wide, open floor space free of tripping hazards.
- Place floor markers in a large circle, one spot fewer than the total number of players.
Say this to open
Everyone except me, please stand on one floor marker around the perimeter. I will start in the center without a marker. Your goal is to swap spots with someone across the circle without letting the person in the middle claim the open spot. You have to commit to your run once you leave your marker. If the center player takes your target spot or your old spot before you reach it, you take the center. All movement must avoid contact.
How to run it
Set perimeter and model round 2 minutes
Direct players to each stand on a floor marker. The facilitator stands in the middle. Walk through one slow motion demonstration: show two players making eye contact, nodding, stepping off their spots, and moving safely across while the middle player steps onto an open marker.
Run initial rounds 3 minutes
Begin full-speed play. Circle players may swap spots at any time. Center player attempts to step onto any vacated spot. When both open spots are taken, the stranded player becomes the new center player.
Increase pace and track swaps 3 minutes
Challenge circle players to maximize the total number of successful swaps across the group within three minutes while continuing to avoid collisions. Rotate the center person as spots are claimed.
Debrief and close 2 minutes
Gather the group back on their spots or in seats. Ask two reflection questions. Hear three or four short participant responses.
Debrief questions
- What subtle signals worked best to confirm a swap before stepping into the open circle?
- At what point did you realize you were committed to moving, and how did you handle uncertainty if the middle player cut you off?
Finished output: Completion of active physical warm-up rounds with zero collisions and successful rotations through the center role.
Remote
This activity requires physical movement across a room and cannot run online as designed. For a remote alternative that exercises non-verbal cues and quick timing, run Mind Meld or Number Count Up: the group attempts to count aloud from 1 to 20 without two people speaking at the same time, restarting if voices overlap.
Hybrid
Not recommended for hybrid delivery. Remote participants cannot share the physical space or run between markers. Run an alternative verbal coordination game for both groups combined.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may choose walking-only rules for the room to accommodate different mobility levels.
- Anyone may opt out of moving and instead serve as referee, spot tracker, or boundary referee without explanation.
If the session gets stuck
- Players collide when rushing toward the same center path.
- Pause the game immediately. Remind players that avoiding physical contact takes precedence over claiming a spot, or require everyone to move at a brisk walk instead of running.
- Nobody steps off their spot because the center player is too watchful.
- Introduce a rule that two pairs must attempt to swap within every ten seconds, or add a countdown so circle players cannot stay rooted.
Terms used here
- Spot marker: A flat disc, tape mark, or designated object placed on the floor to mark a player station.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo library, attributed to Mark Collard.
Retained the defining mechanic from Playmeo where circle players swap spots while a middle player attempts to steal an open spot, with a strong warning against collisions. UWT established the step timing, safety scripts, debrief questions, accessibility options, and explicit remote limits.
