Emoji Card Reflection
Participants review an array of emoji cards, pick one that reflects an emotion they experienced during a shared activity, and explain their choice in pairs.
10 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Articulate specific feelings experienced during an activity using visual emoji prompts.
Use it when: Directly after a team exercise, workshop module, or milestone when participants need a quick, concrete way to unpack personal reactions.
Skip it when: Skip when the session topic involves acute trauma, or when participants lack visual access to cards without alternative sensory descriptions.
Group arrangement: Browsing as a whole group, followed by conversations in pairs
Timing: Playmeo lists 1 to 2 minutes for quick paired sharing; UWT expands to 10 minutes to allow adequate browsing, paired dialogue, card returns, and a short group debrief.
Materials and tools
- One deck of 50 visual emoji cards (or printable printable emoji cards cut into individual tiles)
- One large low table or cleared floor area
- One countdown timer visible to the facilitator
Before participants arrive
- Spread all emoji cards face up across a table or cleared floor area so every card is visible without overlapping.
- Ensure wide walkway space around the display so participants can walk around freely.
Say this to open
Take a look at the emoji cards spread out on the table. Think back over our work together today and identify one specific moment where you felt a clear emotion. Browse the cards and pick one card that best represents that feeling.
How to run it
Select an emoji 2 minutes
Invite the room to circle the table. Each person scans the collection and selects one card representing an emotion they felt during the program. If someone else picked the card they wanted, ask them to pick an alternative card that captures a related feeling. Anyone may choose to view cards without picking one up.
Pair up and explain choices 4 minutes
Direct participants to pair with a partner nearby. If there is an odd number of participants, form one group of three. Partner A takes 90 seconds to show their card, describe the moment it represents, and explain why that feeling was significant. Partner B listens without interrupting. Signal at 90 seconds for partners to switch roles. In a trio, allocate 60 seconds per person.
Return cards and reset 1 minutes
Ask participants to thank their partner and return their cards face up to the table so the display is restored.
Debrief to the whole room 3 minutes
Reconvene the room. Ask two or three volunteers to share an observation from their conversation. Close when time expires.
Debrief questions
- What made it easier or harder to attach an emoji to a real moment from today?
- What difference did you notice between what happened on the outside and how you felt on the inside?
- How did seeing other people's card choices change your understanding of the exercise we just completed?
Finished output: Every participant identifies an emotion card and verbally shares their choice with a partner, or opts out to observe privately.
Remote
Display a digital whiteboard or slide containing numbered emoji graphics. Participants browse silently for 2 minutes and privately record the number of their chosen emoji. Send participants into breakout pairs for 4 minutes to share their choices. Reconvene in the main room for 3 minutes of whole-group debrief.
Hybrid
Provide remote participants with a shared digital slide showing the same numbered emoji set displayed on the physical table. Create dedicated remote-to-remote breakout pairs and in-person pairs so both groups share their selected cards simultaneously during the paired step.
Access and participation choices
- Provide a printed sheet with descriptive feeling words alongside emoji images for participants with low vision.
- Allow participants to pass on sharing personal details and instead speak about a neutral observation or simply listen to their partner.
If the session gets stuck
- Two participants want the exact same card.
- Remind participants that emojis are approximations. One person can take the card, and the other can point to it, select a nearby alternative, or use a blank card to sketch their own.
- A participant monopolizes speaking time during the paired share.
- Announce the halfway switch point clearly with a chime, stating explicitly that it is now time for the second partner to share.
Terms used here
- Emoji card: A physical card featuring a standardized graphic face or icon depicting an emotional expression.

Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo activity database; video transcript presents Mark Collard demonstrating the proprietary Emoji Cards deck.
Retained the core Playmeo activity mechanic of spreading emoji cards face up, selecting cards reflecting an experienced emotion, and sharing rationale in pairs. Added explicit 10-minute timing structure, structured turn switches, access accommodations, print-at-home card alternatives, and hybrid participation instructions.
