Vision Board
Participants select images, words, and symbols to assemble a collage showing a future goal or team aspiration. They then share one chosen element with a partner or small group.
30 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Produce an individual or collective visual collage that depicts specific goals or working aspirations.
Use it when: Use during project kickoffs, strategic planning retreats, or team resets when people need to clarify shared goals or individual milestones.
Skip it when: Skip when the team faces immediate operational emergencies requiring quick tactical decisions, or when participants lack interest in visual, collage-based exercises.
Group arrangement: Individual work followed by pairs or trios
Timing: Playmeo outlines 20 to 30 minutes in overview and 30 to 45 minutes for full collaging; 30 minutes provides a focused workshop session.
Materials and tools
- One sheet of sturdy cardboard or construction paper (A4 or letter size) per participant
- Assorted magazines, catalogues, or printed image collections (at least 2 per person)
- One pair of scissors per person
- One glue stick per person
- Markers or pens (one per person)
- Pre-cut words or phrases (for accessibility)
- Internet-connected tablet or laptop for in-person participants who prefer digital image selection
- Digital whiteboard software and web image access for remote participants
Before participants arrive
- Lay out magazines, scissors, glue sticks, and pre-cut words in the center of tables.
- Distribute one backing sheet and one marker to each seat.
- If running online, create individual workspace boards or frames in a shared digital whiteboard tool.
Say this to open
Take a moment to think about a goal you want to accomplish, either for our team work or your own professional focus over the next six months. For example, if your goal is calmer communication under pressure, you might look for a picture of still water or the word 'listen.' Your task is to browse the printed materials, cut out pictures or words that reflect this direction, and glue them onto your paper to create a vision collage. You can include as many or as few images as you like. You will have full choice over what you show and explain to others.
How to run it
Introduce objective and clarify prompt 3 minutes
State the focus prompt clearly: personal professional focus, team norms, or an upcoming project objective. Explain the timing, materials, and privacy expectations. Read the opening script. Remind participants that collage skills do not matter and simple word cutouts work as well as pictures.
Select images and words 10 minutes
Participants search magazines and print media individually. They cut or tear out pictures, words, headlines, and textures that match their target goal. If someone prefers drawing or writing phrases, they can use markers directly on their board.
Assemble the vision collage 7 minutes
Participants arrange their cutouts on their backing sheet and paste them down using glue sticks. Announce when two minutes remain in this phase so people can finish securing their chosen items.
Share in pairs or small groups 6 minutes
Group participants into pairs or trios. In pairs, each person takes up to 90 seconds to present. In trios, cue participants to keep their share to 60 seconds each so all three finish within the time. Participants may pass entirely or describe only a single neutral cutout.
Facilitate whole-room reflection 4 minutes
Bring the full room together. Ask two or three volunteers to share common themes or surprises that emerged across their boards. Keep individual contributions brief so the session closes within the allotted time.
Debrief questions
- What common patterns or themes did you notice across different boards?
- Which image or phrase best anchors the daily actions you plan to take?
- How can our team support one of the specific aims pictured on your board?
Finished output: A physical collage or digital board displaying visual cues and phrases representing goals.
Remote
Set up a shared digital whiteboard with an individual frame per participant. Participants search online images or paste text clippings into their frame for 17 minutes total. Split the group into breakout rooms of pairs or trios for 6 minutes of sharing, then return to the main room for the final 4-minute debrief.
Hybrid
In-person participants use paper, magazines, and glue; remote participants use individual frames on a digital whiteboard. During the sharing step, form pairs or trios within the room, and create separate virtual breakout rooms of pairs or trios for remote attendees. For the final debrief, display the digital whiteboard on the room screen and alternate contributions between in-person and remote participants.
Access and participation choices
- Offer pre-cut words, markers, and a digital tablet option for anyone with motor strain or fatigue from using scissors.
- Participants may keep their collage private, focus solely on team work goals rather than personal topics, or decline to speak during sharing.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants spend all their time browsing magazines without cutting anything out.
- Give a five-minute warning during image selection: 'Aim to clip three pictures or words right now, even if you are not sure you will use them all.'
- A participant feels uncomfortable with artistic activities or worries about aesthetic quality.
- Remind the room that neatness has no value here; pasting two plain printed words on a blank sheet meets the goal completely.
Terms used here
- Vision Board: A collage of images, phrases, and symbols assembled to represent intentions, goals, or desired outcomes.
Sources and adaptation
Playmeo attributes the activity to Lisa Laura (published May 2021, updated March 2026).
Retained the core mechanic of cutting and pasting collage images to represent goals from Playmeo evidence. Added structured 30-minute timing, pair and trio management rules to scale cleanly to 24 participants, hybrid and remote protocols, safety choices for privacy, and accessible materials including pre-cut words and digital alternatives.
