United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Mindfulness Jar
Participants assemble a clear jar with water, glycerin, glitter, and dish soap, then shake it and watch the glitter slowly settle to observe how busy thoughts come to rest.
20 minutes | 3 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Construct a physical sensory jar and observe suspended glitter settle as a tangible visual anchor for calm.
Use it when: Use during a transition after intense work or in a wellbeing workshop to give people a tangible self-regulation tool.
Skip it when: Skip when liquid spills present safety hazards, when workspace cleanup is impossible, or when the group needs active analytical debate.
Group arrangement: Individual work seated at tables of 3 to 6, followed by whole-room quiet observation
Timing: Expanded from Playmeo 5 to 10 minute outline to 20 minutes to give up to 24 people sufficient time to pour liquids, seal jars, and observe settling without rushing.
Materials and tools
- 1 clear jar with lid for facilitator demonstration
- 1 clear jar with tight-sealing lid per person (glass or clear plastic, 250 to 500 ml)
- Fine glitter (1 to 2 tablespoons per person)
- Warm water pitchers (1 pitcher per table of 3 to 6 people)
- Glycerin or clear corn syrup in small pourable bottles (1 bottle of approx 250 ml per table of 3 to 6 people)
- Liquid dish soap in small dropper bottles (1 dropper bottle per table of 3 to 6 people)
- Spoons for measuring glitter (1 per 2 to 3 people)
- Table coverings (newspaper, butcher paper, or wipeable plastic mats for all tables)
- Paper towels for spill cleanup (1 roll per table)
- Waterproof adhesive tape or superglue for optional permanent sealing
Before participants arrive
- Cover work tables completely with protective table coverings.
- Place 1 jar at each seat.
- Place 1 pitcher of warm water, 1 pourable bottle of glycerin, 1 dropper bottle of dish soap, spoons, and paper towels in the center of each table.
- Prepare the facilitator demonstration jar and materials at the front.
Say this to open
Today we will make a mindfulness sensory jar. The swirling glitter represents a busy mind packed with swirling thoughts. As we pause and watch, the glitter gradually drifts to the bottom, clearing the water. Take your jar and follow along step by step as we build it together.
How to run it
Introduce and add glitter 4 minutes
Explain the activity using the opening script. Demonstrate putting one spoonful of glitter into the demo jar. Direct participants to spoon 1 to 2 spoonfuls of glitter into their own jars.
Add liquids and seal 8 minutes
Demonstrate the liquid steps: pour warm water until half full, swirl gently, add glycerin to fill near the rim, and add 1 or 2 drops of dish soap. Direct participants at each table to follow along simultaneously. Prompt them to share the pitchers and glycerin bottles across their table of 3 to 6. Keep liquid roughly 1 cm below the top rim. Wipe jar rims with paper towels and screw lids on tightly. Offer waterproof tape to seal the lid securely.
Shake and observe 4 minutes
Invite everyone to pick up their jar, shake it firmly for five seconds, and place it down on the table. Ask everyone to sit quietly in silence for two full minutes while watching the glitter swirl and settle to the bottom. Encourage people to rest their hands in their laps and breathe naturally.
Debrief and close 4 minutes
Bring attention back to the whole room. Ask two or three volunteers to share what they noticed in their focus or body while watching the glitter settle. Conclude the exercise and let participants take their jars.
Debrief questions
- What did you notice in your body or focus while watching the glitter settle?
- How did the motion of the swirling liquid compare to your thoughts during a busy or stressful moment?
- Where in your regular day could pausing to watch a visual anchor like this be practical?
Finished output: Each participant completes a sealed personal mindfulness sensory jar, or chooses to observe without assembling.
Remote
Send an ingredient list ahead of time (clear jar with lid, warm water, fine glitter, glycerin or clear corn syrup, liquid dish soap). Facilitate assembly live on video step by step. Lead the two-minute silent settling observation with all microphones muted and cameras on or off by personal preference.
Hybrid
Ship or distribute identical supply kits to remote participants in advance. In-person participants work at their shared tables while remote participants work at their home desks. Display remote video tiles on the room screen during the silent observation so both groups watch their jars settle together.
Access and participation choices
- Participants who prefer not to handle glitter or liquids may watch the facilitator's jar or observe a pre-assembled demo jar.
- Plastic jars can replace glass for anyone needing lightweight or shatter-resistant materials.
- Participants may decline to speak during debrief without giving a reason.
If the session gets stuck
- The glitter clumps at the water surface and refuses to disperse.
- Add one extra drop of liquid dish soap to break surface tension and gently swirl the jar.
- The glitter sinks instantly instead of slowly drifting down.
- Pour out a small amount of liquid and top up with additional glycerin or corn syrup to thicken the mixture.
- Bottlenecks form at the table while people wait for warm water pitchers.
- Have one person at each table act as the pourer for water while others hold their jars steady.
Terms used here
- Glycerin: A clear, odorless, thick liquid used in crafts and food that increases fluid viscosity so suspended glitter falls slowly.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in the Playmeo Activity Database (posted September 2021 by Lisa Laura).
Retained Playmeo core recipe (jar, warm water, glitter, glycerin or corn syrup, dish soap) and thematic focus on visualizing settling thoughts. UWT adjusted duration from 15 to 20 minutes, increased assembly timing, allocated dedicated supplies per table of 3 to 6 to eliminate bottlenecks for up to 24 participants, added table coverings, clarified simultaneous table work, and established structured debrief and access choices.
