United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Storyline
Participants build a physical timeline of a shared experience by standing on an imaginary or marked floor line. Each time an event is added, the group recounts the sequence chronologically from the start.
15 minutes | 4 to 16 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Reconstruct a chronological sequence of events and individual perspectives from a shared experience.
Use it when: Use directly after a team project, simulation, or workshop exercise to map what happened before evaluating results.
Skip it when: Skip when participants did not share a common project, when fewer than four contributors are willing to share, or when the group lacks enough shared context to map an actual sequence.
Group arrangement: Whole group along a single floor line. For groups over 8, participants may form pairs to agree on and share a single joint milestone sentence, keeping the total line between 6 and 10 points.
Timing: 15 minutes, consistent with the 5 to 15 minute band in Playmeo evidence.
Materials and tools
- Floor tape or chalk to mark the timeline ends (optional)
- Index cards and marker for table or seated proxy options
- Digital whiteboard if running hybrid or remote
Before participants arrive
- Clear a walking path across the room at least 4 meters long.
- Designate one end as the start of the shared experience and the other end as the finish.
Say this to open
This line on the floor represents our shared experience from the start of the session to right now. When you think of a specific event, step onto that spot on the line, or have a proxy mark it, and say one sentence describing what happened.
How to run it
Establish line and first memory 3 minutes
Point out the start and end of the timeline. Speak the opening script. Invite one volunteer to step onto the line where their memory occurred, or mark it with a proxy card. The volunteer shares that memory in a single sentence. For example: 'We opened the project brief and saw the budget was cut in half.'
Build and recount sequence 7 minutes
Invite participants to add points one by one. In groups over 8, invite remaining people to pair up, agree on a milestone, and have one partner stand on the line while both agree on one shared sentence. After each addition, recount the sequence: every standing person or proxy speaks their single sentence in chronological order. Continue until 6 to 10 points are placed.
Final cumulative recount 2 minutes
With all milestones placed, run through the complete timeline one final time. Starting at the earliest event, each standing person, pair speaker, or proxy speaks their sentence without pauses until the narrative reaches the end point.
Debrief the narrative 3 minutes
Invite everyone to remain in place or take seats. Ask the debrief questions to examine what the sequence reveals about the group experience. Take three or four responses from the room.
Debrief questions
- Where did our memories cluster most densely along the timeline, and what was happening then?
- What is one moment someone shared that you had forgotten or experienced differently?
Finished output: A physical or digital chronological timeline of the group experience, recounted out loud from beginning to end.
Remote
Draw a horizontal timeline on a shared digital whiteboard. When a participant adds a sticky note, they read their note in one sentence. The facilitator then calls on each note owner from left to right to read their single sentence in chronological order. The final run reads every note in sequence.
Hybrid
Maintain a digital whiteboard with a timeline projected in the room. In-person participants step onto the floor line while remote participants add a sticky note on the digital board. The facilitator alternates between in-person and remote contributors, prompting each person to speak their sentence during each cumulative sequence.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may sit along the line, place an index card on the floor, or call out a memory from their seat while a proxy marks the spot.
- Contributing a memory is optional; participants may choose to observe the line and contribute observations during the final debrief without stating a personal memory.
If the session gets stuck
- Participants tell long stories, causing the cumulative retelling to drag.
- Remind contributors before they speak that each milestone must be a single concise sentence.
- Two people want to mark the exact same moment.
- Have them stand side by side at that point on the line; each speaks one sentence from their perspective.
Terms used here
- Debrief: A structured reflection session held after an exercise to review what happened and identify takeaways.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo activity catalog, where it is attributed to Mark Collard.
Retained the visual timeline and cumulative recounting structure from Playmeo. Added a strict single-sentence constraint per milestone to maintain pacing across intermediate cumulative passes. Clarified paired contributions for groups over 8 so timeline points remain capped at 10. Added accessibility proxy options and hybrid/remote adaptations.
