Wordles Visual Word Puzzles

Participants work together to decipher visual word puzzles that conceal familiar idioms and phrases. The group examines spatial arrangements, font styling, and word positions to solve each puzzle card.

15 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Collaboratively decode visual wordplay puzzles to observe how varied viewpoints help uncover solutions.

Use it when: Use during team warm-ups, transition breaks, or problem-solving workshops to practice lateral thinking and joint sensemaking.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have mixed fluency in English idioms, or when the group needs to address high-stakes operational work instead of light lateral games.

Group arrangement: Small groups of 3 to 4 participants or a single plenary circle

Timing: UWT 15-minute format based on Playmeo 5 to 15 minute band

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Print and cut the supplied puzzle cards.
  2. Stack the cards face down in the center of each table or hold them face down for whole-room play.

Say this to open

Welcome. We have a set of visual word puzzles called Wordles. Note that these are visual rebus puzzles, not the digital five-letter word game. Each card arranges words, letters, or symbols to hide a common phrase or idiom. For example, if you saw the word 'STAND' positioned above the number '4', the answer would be 'understand'. We will look at one card at a time. Call out ideas, build on each other's guesses, and let us see how many we can solve together.

How to run it

  1. Introduce the puzzle format 3 minutes

Gather participants around the table or display cards. Speak the opening script. Explain the visual mechanic using the neutral example ('STAND' over '4' equals 'understand'). Note that all answers represent familiar English expressions.

  2. Decipher initial puzzle cards 4 minutes

Flip over the first card face up so everyone can inspect it. Invite participants to share observations and guesses out loud. If the group stays stuck for more than 45 seconds, provide a subtle hint from the answer key. When solved, confirm the answer and reveal the second card. Work through cards 1 to 3.

  3. Solve remaining puzzle cards 5 minutes

Continue presenting cards 4 through 8 one at a time. Give brief prompts if energy stalls. Stop early if all cards are solved or when the group completes card 8.

  4. Debrief joint discovery 3 minutes

Gather everyone back together. Ask 1 or 2 debrief questions to reflect on how sharing varied perspectives helped reveal answers. Take 2 to 3 quick participant comments to conclude.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A completed set of solved visual word puzzles with shared group reflections.

Remote

Share one puzzle slide at a time on a shared screen. Allow participants to call out guesses verbally or type them into the chat. Advance to the next slide once solved.

Hybrid

Display each puzzle card simultaneously on a digital screen visible to in-person and remote participants. Alternate calling on remote chat responses and in-person room guesses for each puzzle.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

One quick-thinking participant shouts out every answer before others can read the card.
Ask participants to wait 10 seconds in silence before anyone speaks, or rotate which person has the first guess on each card.
The group gets stuck and remains silent on an unfamiliar idiom.
Provide the category or first word of the solution as a direct hint, then move on quickly if interest wanes.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library, attributed to Mark Collard. The underlying rebus word puzzle mechanic is a traditional lateral-thinking puzzle format.

Playmeo's published instructions require downloading proprietary cards from a members resource tab. UWT retained the core mechanic of turning over visual wordplay cards one by one to decipher hidden idioms, adding a printable set of 8 standard rebus puzzles, explicit 4-step pacing summing to 15 minutes, facilitator scripts, remote adjustments, and debrief prompts.
