Verbal Number Exchange

Participants count off around a circle, mingle to verbally swap numbers with exactly five different partners, and audit whether all numbers survived intact.

15 minutes | 6 to 20 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Track information accuracy and message retention across multiple verbal handoffs without notes or visual aids.

Use it when: Use when examining how verbal messages drop, duplicate, or alter during repeated handoffs across a team.

Skip it when: Skip in noisy spaces where speech cannot be heard clearly, or when the active group cannot be configured as an even number of at least six participants.

Group arrangement: Even-numbered standing circle, followed by rotating one-on-one pair mingles.

Timing: Matches the 10 to 15 minute duration in the Playmeo source record.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear enough floor space for all participants to stand in a circle and move around freely.

Say this to open

We are going to test auditory tracking and memory across multiple handoffs. We will count off around our circle so everyone holds an initial number in memory. Then we will mingle. When you meet a partner, swap numbers aloud. If you hold 3 and they hold 7, you leave holding 7 and they leave holding 3. You must complete exactly five exchanges with five different people, then step back to your place in the circle.

How to run it

  1. Form circle and number off 3 minutes

Assemble the group in a circle. Confirm the total participant count is an even number between 6 and 20. If odd, invite one person to serve as timekeeper or co-facilitator. A designated participant calls out 'One'. The person to their left calls 'Two', continuing clockwise until every participant has a distinct starting number. Instruct everyone to memorize their initial number. Speak opening script.

  2. Execute five verbal trades 5 minutes

Invite the room to mingle. In each exchange, two participants meet, state their held numbers aloud, and swap them. Neutral example: Person A holds 4 and Person B holds 9. They speak their numbers; Person A now holds 9 and Person B now holds 4. No writing, written notes, or display boards are allowed. Each person tracks their own trade count privately. When a participant completes five trades with five distinct partners, they immediately return to their spot in the circle and wait in silence.

  3. Audit final numbers 3 minutes

Call the circle to order once all participants have returned. Moving clockwise starting from the original Person One, each participant states aloud the number they currently hold. The facilitator notes duplicates, missing numbers, or intact chains.

  4. Debrief handoff breakdowns 4 minutes

Facilitate a group debrief on where numbers shifted or dropped out. Take 3 to 4 contributions from the room exploring communication breakdowns and verification strategies.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A completed whole-group roll call showing the final distribution of numbers and the count of retained versus duplicated numbers.

Remote

Run in an online meeting with an even number of participants. Assign numbers 1 to N using the onscreen roster. Run five consecutive 45-second breakout room rounds with automated randomized pairs. In each breakout, pairs speak their numbers to swap them, keeping chat closed. Return to the main room and have each person type their final held number into chat when the facilitator says 'Go'.

Hybrid

Hybrid delivery is not recommended. Simultaneous verbal pairings between room speakers and remote microphones create acoustic interference and prevent clear one-on-one spoken exchanges. Run all participants fully remote on individual devices or fully in person.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants lose track of how many trades they have completed.
Tell participants to track their trade count discreetly using fingers held inside a pocket.
Two participants finish early and attempt to trade with each other a second time.
Remind everyone that trades must be with five distinct individuals. If no new partner is immediately free, wait quietly until another person finishes a trade.

Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo activity database, where Mark Collard is listed as author.

Retained the core Playmeo mechanic of numbering off sequentially, mingling to complete five trades without written aids, and returning to the circle. UWT adjusted group_min to 6 and mandated an even participant count so the mathematical condition of five pair trades per person can resolve cleanly. Integrated non-verbal signing access guidelines and removed extraneous memory prompts.
